The research assistant provides services in support of contract and grant investigations conducted by faculty within the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resources. The research assistant is responsible for carrying out duties related to the collection, manipulation, and analysis of water and sediment quality as well as the monitoring of river restoration projects in North Carolina. The needs of the faculty change over time, so periodic adjustments and reallocations of responsibilities can be expected. However, specific responsibilities may include the following:

1) The installation, maintenance, and programming of water quality equipment including ISCO automated samplers, Greenspan turbidity probes, and various types of pressure transducers;

2) The measurement of stream flow (discharge) using the USGS horizontally integrated methods;

3) The examination and review of collected hydrologic and water quality data to eliminate erroneous records, and its subsequent entry into spreadsheet and other database programs;

4) The collection of water quality samples for trace metal analysis using ultra-clean sampling protocols;

5) The installation of groundwater wells, and the collection of water levels within the wells;

6) The laboratory analysis of water quality samples for suspended sediment concentrations using the USGS methods;

7) The analysis of sediment samples for grain size using a laser particle size analyzer;

8) The plotting of water quality data using various software programs including Origin and Microsoft Excel;

9) The surveying of channel cross-sections, profile, and planform using a professional grade total station;

10) The plotting and contouring of survey data using various software programs including Surfer;

11) The hydrological modeling of channelized flow using one- and two-dimensional modeling routines;

12) The supervising of student workers conducting general field and lab work;

13) The coordination (organization) of field trip logistics (transportation, lodging, equipment, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position:

Ability to effectively use computers and computer software, including Microsoft Excel; ability to conduct fieldwork in relatively secluded areas.

Minimum Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in geology, hydrology or related field. Ability to perform the work assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

M.S. degree is preferred
Prior experience with ISCO samplers and water level recorders
