Department

The Department of Communication, housed in the School of Business and Industry, currently houses approximately 200 students. We currently offer an ACEJMC accredited Bachelor of the Arts program in Communication, with tracks in Public Relations and Advertising, Digital Media Production, and Digital Journalism. The department is rapidly approaching reaccreditation in 2023 and is focused on development and refinement of its curriculum and offerings in student organizations. We also house a student media program that includes a student-run newspaper (The Chanticleer) and a student-run FM radio station (WLJS 91.9). Students also can join our Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and Zeta Phi Eta.

Job Summary

The Department of Communication invites applications for the position of Instructor of Communication, with teaching responsibilities in audio production, video production, podcasting and occasional digital journalism courses. This position entails a 4:4 teaching load and approximately 9 months of full-time service beginning August 2023. Further, the position is for teaching undergraduate Communication courses and requires teaching competencies in digital media production. Special consideration will be given to those skilled in contemporary digital media production for cross-platform distribution and journalism.

Courses are offered through various delivery formats including face-to-face, hybrid/blended, and 100% on-line. JSU also serves a robust population of nontraditional and first-generation learners. Quality teaching will be the successful candidate’s primary responsibility, but advising, in balance with service to the department supporting our student media outlets, primarily WLJS 91.9 FM and contributing to the ongoing development and innovation in our curriculum as we strive to sustain full accreditation.

Qualifications

Required

  • A master’s degree, or at least 18 hours of study completed, in accordance with SACSCOC accreditation standards.
  • 3-5 years of industry experience in journalism or digital media production.
  • Industry experience with audio media production for broadcast or digital distribution.

Preferred

  • 5-10 years of industry experience in journalism or digital media production.
  • Industry experience in radio production or radio news reporting.
  • Evidence of quality prior teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Philosophical commitment to digital, technological, and disciplinary integration.
