Grant and Contract Accounting has an outstanding opportunity for a Compliance Analyst. This position will provide project management for unique and complex projects with the leadership of funded programs to effectively administer and support the University’s most complicated grants and contracts. This individual will serve as a flexible resource that works independently to examine and analyze fiscal records, institutional practices and procedures, develop and deliver compliance analytics, develop and deliver compliance outreach and training, as well as develop and foster relationships with university departments, researchers and sponsors to provide collaborative services in the GCA office.

This position needs to balance the needs of the existing portfolio of awards which involves daily and monthly deadlines, along with ad hoc assignments from the Director related to audit requests, public records requests, resolving complicated accounting issues, and developing strong relationships with internal and external customers and process partners.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Managing Portfolio

  • Manage awards from setup to closeout, including perform complex fiscal analysis and financial reporting of federal and non-federal awards. This includes projecting, analyzing, planning, interpreting and reviewing fiscal operations involving a variety of disciplines in order to prepare invoices, reports and closings.

  • Develop and deliver high quality training; includes developing best practices, training program development, writing and editing, document design, PowerPoint presentation development and effective delivery of training program

  • Develop and deliver campus-wide communication, including verbal presentations and written guidance

  • Consult with funding agencies to resolve problems and obtain approval for deviation

  • Consult with the department(s) or areas being reviewed to establish an appropriate management/oversight structure for the project

  • Develop and negotiate recommendations to senior management that provide necessary guidance and resolution to identified problems; these must also be responsive to the needs articulated by the department(s) where each project is based

    Supervision of others

  • Hiring student interns

  • Providing training

  • Reviewing work product such as journal vouchers

  • Managing performance

    Ad Hoc Assignments

  • Solve complex accounting issues at the request of the Director and prepare recommendations to improve the related process.

  • Work closely with the Director and Associate Director to coordinate internal and external audits and to produce special requests for information by entities external to GCA

  • Bachelors’ degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or other related field and three years demonstrated experience in fiscal management and/or financial analysis. Equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for degree.

  • General knowledge of basic accounting principles, working with budgets and understanding financial statements
  • Demonstrated ability to apply accounting knowledge to design a solution to a complex issue
  • Working knowledge of GCA processes, including budget set-up, invoicing, financial reporting, invoicing and closeout.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment effectively in decision-making process
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity
  • Ability to handle confidential information responsibly
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain harmonious working relationships and effectively address complex and sensitive administrative issues
  • Demonstrated experience in successful handling of multiple projects with critical deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated presentation development and presentation skills to large groups

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

  • Experience with UW financial accounting systems including FAS and MyFinancial Desktop
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Participated in a work environment using Lean or a similar structured process improvement effort
