Description

The Adult Basic Education Instructor will develop a curriculum to assist students build their reading, writing, social studies, and science knowledge and teach classes that integrate adult education with College and Career Readiness standards by providing an environment that encourages student participation, interpersonal skill development and reinforces critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Areas of discipline include Math and English.

These are grant-funded positions.

Mathematics Instructor- 25 hours/week
Monday-Thursday 8:00am-2:30pm

English Instructor- 8 hours/week
Tuesday & Wednesday 6:00pm-8:00pm

Examples of Duties

  • Develops the basic skills component of a curriculum to assist students develop reading, writing, social studies, and science skills, study skills, and career readiness skills to meet the needs of adult learners.
  • Incorporates a contextualized curriculum into the literacy program.
  • Participates in regular meetings and communications with administration in order to collaborate, align instruction, monitor students’ progress, and identify issues they may have while attending classes.
  • Evaluates and revises the basic skills component of the curriculum to meet the needs of the students.
  • Evaluates students’ basic skills progress regularly.
  • Maintains current records on all students, including but not limited to accurate attendance records and reports absences to the team coordinator.
  • Assists those students who do not have a high school diploma in building reading, writing, social studies, and science skills to achieve a passing score on an HSE exam.
  • Promotes the mission of the program in a positive manner with all staff, participants and partners, and a consistent exchange of information in a transparent and collaborative environment.
  • Utilizes technology and online classroom experience. Microsoft Proficient.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred
  • New Jersey teaching certification preferred
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in adult education
  • Knowledge of subject area and effective teaching methods
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of adult basic education standardized assessment instruments
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with varied hours to meet department and College needs
  • Possess the ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff and a commitment to a student-centered environment
