Position Summary:

The Department of Communication invites applications for instructor positions in order to create a pool for advance and short-notice hiring based on program need. Public speaking instructors provide instruction in classroom, using a common course syllabus across multiple sections. The instructor is responsible for facilitating the class, grading speeches, teaching basic communication processes, and meeting with students and faculty as needed.

This is a part or full-time temporary instructor position. The instructor is responsible for educating undergraduate students through classroom instruction.

The Department of Communication will strongly consider applicants who have an interest in transforming undergraduate programs to better serve students of diverse backgrounds. Responsibilities:

  • Construction of a course syllabus, consistent with the common course syllabus, that stipulates course objectives, content, and grading criteria.
  • Preparation of course presentations and instructional materials.
  • Delivery of instruction.
  • Consultation with and evaluation of students.
  • Maintenance of clear records on student performance, as well as any other factors involved with the grading of students such as attendance.
  • Compliance with departmental and institutional policies and procedures including but not limited to submitting grades, holding office hours, and adhering to decisions regarding instructional matters such as texts, assignments, grading standards.
  • Participation in department and/or institutional assessments of student learning.
  • Compliance with institutional procedures such as Title IX, Ethics, FERPA, and any other policies the institution deems applicable

  • Teaching at the college level (2 years preferred), Blackboard learning management system.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds is highly desirable.

Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive research university offering programs from the baccalaureate through the doctorate.
