Who We Are:

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) is one of four campuses in the University of Colorado system and is home to over 9,000 undergraduate and 1,800 graduate students. UCCS offers 53 undergraduate degree programs, 24 graduate degree programs, and 8 doctoral programs. UCCS is also home to the world’s only Bachelor of InnovationTM program, which allows our graduates to master multi-disciplinary skills and graduate ready to create real change in the world. UCCS was recently classified as a “High Research Activity” university by the Carnegie Foundation and takes pride in being the only higher education institution in southern Colorado that explicitly includes research as part of its mission. About the College of Education:

The UCCS College of Education is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). We offer undergraduate and advanced degrees, initial and advanced licenses, and additional endorsements. In fall 2021, 1,348 students were enrolled for 9,532 credit hours across three departments: Teaching and Learning; Counseling and Human Services; and Leadership, Research, and Foundations. The majority of students in the Department of Teaching and Learning complete the Bachelor of Arts in Inclusive Elementary Education (IELM). The UCCSTeach program is designed to serve secondary math and science educator majors. The Special Education program offers undergraduate and graduate licensure in Special Education Generalist and a Master of Arts degree in Special Education. The department also offers a BA in Inclusive Early Childhood Education (IECE) and a Bachelor of Innovation in Inclusive Early Childhood Leadership (IECL). The Department of Counseling and Human Services offers the MA in Counseling and Human Services (CACREP accredited School and Clinical Mental Health programs), Master of Arts Degree in Counseling and Human Services with an emphasis in Counseling and Leadership Air Officer Commanding Cohort (AOCC) in collaboration with the United States Air Force Academy, a minor in Human Services general and specialized tracks including Substance and Recovery (Addictions), and licensure coursework for School Counseling. The Department of Leadership, Research, and Foundations offers a Master of Arts Degree in Leadership with an emphasis in Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE), coursework for principal or superintendent’s license, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Research, and Policy.

About the Position:

The Dean of the College of Education is the chief academic and administrative officer for the college and reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Provost. The Dean demonstrates strong leadership, management, and development skills to support faculty in teaching, research, and service within the college’s departments. The College of Education is committed to creating an accessible, supportive environment and an educational experience that recognizes diversity and cultural competence as integral components of academic excellence. The Dean will be an articulate advocate and spokesperson for the College of Education, working effectively with students, staff, faculty, other Deans, and campus leadership. Working within a framework of shared governance, the Dean will lead the College in advancing its strategic vision and plan to strengthen and enhance diversity, academic programs, research, collaborations, and responsiveness to opportunities in school systems, counseling, and governmental agencies at local, state, national and international levels. In addition, the Dean is expected to be a visible force beyond the campus by building relationships and partnerships with the alumni and local education, mental health, and community leaders. The Dean represents the college in relations with state education and mental health departments and participates in state-wide meetings with Education Deans and regional school administrators. Accreditation, fund raising, grant activity, and program development will be important components of the Dean’s responsibilities. 

The Dean provides leadership to the College of Education and with faculty and staff:

    Establishes and supports the shared vision and strategic plan that is consistent with the mission and goals of the University and College

    Provides leadership in promoting and supporting College’s values, vision and programs of equity and inclusion

    Promotes quality academic programs that meet the educational requirements of the students and external constituents

    Encourages a climate of collaboration, service, and support

    Advances a research environment aligned with the mission of the campus

    Plans and coordinates academic program reviews to maintain accreditation

    Promotes an environment of open communication

    Embraces a culture of diversity and community with faculty, staff, and students

    Establishes collaborative relationships with the P-20 educational community at local, state, federal, and international levels

    Establishes collaborative relationships with the counseling and mental health agencies at local, state, federal, and international levels

    Maintains collaborative relationships with fellow Deans on the UCCS campus and other Deans of Education in the CU System and the state, as well as state and local elected officials

    Provides guidance and oversight of reappointment, promotion, and tenure policies and procedures

 

The Dean is responsible for development activities in the College of Education:

    Develops community, industry and governmental partnerships that support College programs and provide external resource enhancement

    Expands and strengthens existing international partnerships and explores new opportunities for growth

    Obtains resources, support, and funding to sustain outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs

    Expands the research infrastructure to assist the faculty in capitalizing on sponsored research opportunities

    Obtains funding for scholarships, technology, and capital development

 

The Dean exercises effective administration and management skills in the College of Education:

    Provides effective management and execution of fiscal and personnel policies and procedures

    Makes decisions in a timely, ethical, and professional manner

    Deals fairly and equitably with all stakeholders including faculty, staff, and students

    Supervises faculty and staff personnel, oversees faculty workload with input from the appropriate department chair, establishes and ensures compliance with equitable policies and procedures including those for promotion and salary adjustments

    Establishes policies and procedures for shared College governance and collegial decision making

What We Offer:

    Min: $140,620; Max: $190,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

    An earned doctorate in a field represented within the College or in a closely related field

    Qualification for the rank of full professor with tenure by virtue of an outstanding record of teaching, scholarly/creative work (including research), and leadership and service

    Demonstrated academic leadership in higher education (minimum of 3 years)

    Demonstrated commitment to and leadership in equity, inclusiveness and diversity

Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience with:

    State licensure requirements

    National accreditation bodies (e.g., CACREP)

    Successful fundraising

    Administering and developing academic programs

    Improving and enhancing program quality

    Online course delivery and implementation

    Management of finances and budgets under an incentive-based budget model framework

    Developing and maintaining partnerships with school districts and governmental and community organizations

    Strategic enrollment and retention activities

    Demonstrated use of shared governance principles in leadership roles
