The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for an Academic Year Adjunct Lecturer in Japanese Studies (two year position, non-tenure-track). We seek a candidate in Contemporary Japanese Studies, with a main or secondary specialization in Second Language Acquisition, Literary or Cultural Studies, Visual Studies, Translation and Interpretation or Applied Linguistics. Santa Clara University is a liberal arts university, and the Modern Languages & Literatures department is focused on undergraduate education. Candidates should possess a Ph.D., be ABD, or possess an equivalent terminal degree in Japanese or a closely related field at the time of application. Teaching experience is required.

The successful candidate must demonstrate superior ability to integrate the teaching of language, cultural awareness and critical thinking at all levels of instruction, expertise with proficiency and Standards-based assessment, and creativity in course design and development so as to contribute to our department’s continued efforts to promote global competence in the Jesuit model of education. The teaching load is five to nine undergraduate courses (lower to upper-division) on the quarter system (Fall, Winter, Spring). This is a two year non-tenure track appointment.

Faculty responsibilities include: Teaching (95%) & Service (5%)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONSThe following are required of all candidates:
  • Ph.D. in Japanese or closely-related field. Applicants who are ABD, accompanied by commensurate academic experience in Japanese Studies or a closely-related field (5-7 years of college or professional teaching) will be considered.

  • Evidence of at least one year of excellence in teaching as instructor of record in Japanese language at the university level

  • Demonstrated expertise with communicatively-oriented, proficiency-oriented and Standards-based language instruction and assessment

  • Native or near native proficiency (oral & written production and comprehension) skills in Japanese and English

  • Solid proficiency with digital technologies as they relate to teaching and service

  • Evidence of creativity in curriculum innovation

  • Ability to promote diversity within curriculum (esp. with respect to traditionally underrepresented or marginalized groups) and departmental extracurricular activities (cultural events, outreach, etc.)

  • Ability to serve as a mentor to students, especially those of diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to work in a collegial and collaborative manner to contribute to departmental goals and priorities

  • Demonstrate understanding and support of the University’s Jesuit mission

  • Ability to teach courses that connect with other disciplines (e.g. STEM, Business, Environmental Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, History, Ethnic Studies) and for our Core Curriculum (including courses taught in English).

  • Experience implementing experiential, and/or project-based learning;

  • Interest and potential in mentoring undergraduates in internships.

  • Demonstration of inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU goals of diversity and equity, demonstrated experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.


Teaching (95%) & Service (5%)

Duties include but are not limited to:

Teaching (95%)

Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including:

  • Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
  • Assigning and evaluating assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students; measuring student learning outcomes within the context of departmental and Core objectives and the ACTFL World Readiness Standards.
  • Holding regular weekly office hours;
  • Submitting student grades that are an appropriate, accurate and fair measure of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
  • Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses.
  • Teaching from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses assigned or work with the Chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
  • Serve as an advisor to assigned students providing informed advice;
  • Develop courses for which they are responsible and contribute to general curriculum development.
  • Work in conjunction with language coordinator on course development, pedagogy and assessment.

Service (5%)

Faculty Handbook section “Specific Functions Related to Service” defines service as “fostering and advancing the mission and goals of the department, the University, or the profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship or creative work such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, and community service performed in virtue of their professional expertise or association with the University.” Service may more specifically include attending department meetings, serving on committees, advising student organizations and honor societies, taking part in student recruitment/orientation efforts, and contributing to the accreditation or program assessment. To respect the time and commitment of AYAL faculty members, service expectations must be commensurate with the full-time equivalency of the appointment.

Service is typically evaluated as 5% of the appointment. Additional service must be included through an assignment letter as part of the faculty member’s formal written appointment.

Other minimal instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.
