Scope of Job:
We seek applicants in the area of curriculum generalist in language arts, social studies, STEM and Secondary Education focused who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Teaching and Learning beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year. The College of Education and P-16 Integration offers teacher preparation at the undergraduate level, master's programs in educational leadership; teacher leadership; educational technology; curriculum and instruction; school psychology; bilingual education, early childhood, reading and literacy; and counseling. We also offer Ed.D.s in educational leadership and curriculum and instruction with several specialization areas. The College of Education and P-16 Integration is fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and is pursuing accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

The candidate selected for this position will join a collaborative and innovative faculty who are dedicated to excellence and equity in education at all levels. This individual will have expertise and experience in teaching elementary methods and curriculum courses such as Teaching Social Studies to Elementary Students, Teaching ELA to Elementary Students, Instruction and Assessment, Teaching Science to Elementary Students, Designing and Implementing Instruction and Assessment, and Human Development and Student Learning.

Responsibilities for this position include the following: (1) teach a full teaching load of undergraduate courses per semester; (2) supervise EC-12 pre-service teacher candidates in the field; (3) participate in program development and innovation for continuous programmatic improvement; (4) participate in program, department, and college meetings; (5) provide professional service to the program, department, and college; (6) advance the goals of the Department of Teaching and Learning and the College of Education and P-16 Integration. UTRGV faculty are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and to advancing the university, college, and program missions.



Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates for this position must meet the following minimum qualifications;
  • M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction (Generalist), Early Childhood Education, Languages Arts Education, Social Studies Education, Math Education, Science Education, STEM Education Curriculum Studies, or another related field with emphasis in teaching Elementary Education (EC-6) or secondary teaching;
  • A minimum of three years teaching experience in public elementary or secondary schools with current teacher certification;
  • Experience using educational technology to support learning; and a commitment toward high quality learning for diverse student populations.





Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
  • Three years of public school teaching





Preferred Qualification:
Candidates with the following qualifications will have preferred status.
  • Ed.D or Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Generalist), Early Childhood Education, Languages Arts Education, Social Studies Education, Math Education, Science Education, STEM Education, Curriculum Studies;
  • Five years of public school teaching (K-12) focused on one of the following areas: language arts, social studies, math, science, STEM;
  • Professional development or curriculum leadership focused on one of the following areas: language arts, social studies, math, science, or STEM;
  • Experience in supervising EC-12 pre-service teacher candidates in the field.

Additional Information:
| UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
