Associate Dean for Administration and Chief Operating Officer
Job Summary
The Associate Dean for Administration and Chief Operating Officer reports directly to the Dean and Chief Executive Officer and oversees operational functions of NU-Q. The role works collaboratively with the Dean and CEO, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and other members of the Senior Leadership Council in developing and implementing overall institutional and operational strategies. The ADA/COO provides the leadership and management necessary to assure that NU-Q has proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to assure its growth and development. Direct, shared, and dotted-line oversight, as determined by the Dean and CEO, includes Budget and Finance, Facilities, Information Technology, Production, HSSE (emergency planning), Human Resources, and others as appropriate. The ADA/COO maintains close relationships with home campus leadership/operational departments and liaises with Education City schools and Qatar Foundation. A member of the senior leadership team, the ADA/COO represents the Dean on operational issues, as appropriate.
Specific Responsibilities
- Build a strong and seamless strategic partnership and working relationship with the Dean and CEO and other members of the Senior Leadership Council.
- Serve on the Dean’s Senior Leadership Council.
- Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean and Chief Academic Officer on the seamless integration of all operational units into NU-Q’s core academic mission.
- Oversee, integrate, and manage relationships between operational directors, and lead continued integration of all operational aspects at a time of institutional consolidation and maturity, in support of our core academic mission.
- Lead proactively on budget, facilities, and operational planning.
- Oversee and continue developing all operational policies, procedures, and processes.
- Lead, collaboratively with the Chief of Staff, on staff recruitment and retention, professional development, performance assessment and improvement, community building, and overall excellence.
- Oversee crisis management and compliance efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
- A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible administrative experience including supervising staff at a peer academic institution.
- Experience working in diverse and globally-oriented educational and/or research institutions.
- Ability to inspire confidence, offer sound judgment, and communicate well.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a grasp of their complex articulations at a global institution like NU-Q.
- Commitment to a transparent institutional culture.
- Leadership skills and competencies including managing people, change management, multi-tasking, delegation, analytical and communications skills, planning and organizing skills, and commitment to teamwork.
- Excellent interpersonal and people skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- A master's degree or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
- Experience in a similar capacity, at an educational or intellectually oriented enterprise, preferably at a U.S. peer university.
- Experience at an institution with fields represented at NU-Q, notably communication, journalism, and liberal arts.
- Commitment to international education, particularly focused on the Global South.
- Creative approach to leadership.
