Knox College invites applications for the full-time, 12-month position of Director of Human Resources. The Director of Human Resources is responsible for directing the HR operations of the College; identifying and leading strategic human resource planning; developing, instituting “best practices” that will encourage and develop the College’s hiring, onboarding, and employee development and assessment practices. All with an eye toward positioning Knox as an employer of choice in higher education.

The position reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administrative Services.


The College’s strategic plan calls for significant investment in its people. Key areas of opportunity for the Director include:

  • Creation and implementation of a robust professional development program to assist our employees in realizing their potential.
  • Service as a strategic partner with areas across the College to ensure that our practices best support our people.
  • Development of strategies to build a diverse workforce and to identify talent within and outside the College for positions of responsibility.
  • Implementation of compensation and benefits programs that provides motivation, incentives and rewards for effective performance.
  • Provide oversight of employee relations, affirmative action, and programming to address workplace harassment and strengthen intercultural competencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Identify and develop professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • Development and implementation of human resources policies and procedures.
  • Compliance with employment law, government regulations, and reporting.
  • Management of the collective bargaining labor relationships and contract negotiations.
  • Administration of retirement and employee benefit plans.
  • Participation in strategic planning for the College.
  • Employee performance management program development.
  • Staff sourcing, recruitment, and selection oversight.
  • Service as Title IX Deputy Coordinator and AA/EO officer for the College.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources or related field of study
  • Progressive experience in a management role, in human resources operations
  • Proficiency and demonstrated success in strategic planning, human resource leadership, people development, performance management, HRIS technical capability, analytic problem solving, presentation and communication skills
  • Proven success in development, implementation, assessment, and realignment of strategic plan initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Labor Relations
  • Possession of SPHR or SHRM-SCP accreditation.

A Knox class is small - average size is 18 students - and it is anything but a passive one-way lecture or note-taking session. Our faculty are not shy about letting students know their own point of view on a subject; but they also expect-and assist-students to form and defend their own opinions and viewpoints in a wide range of coursework. They challenge assumptions and teach students to be independent thinkers.

Our faculty don't hide away in their offices. Their doors are open to work closely with students throughout their educational careers. Through one-on-one mentoring, professors help students plan their studies and even design their own majors and research projects.
