The laboratory's focus is the generation of cardiac phenotypes from human embryonic stem cells and the characterization of cardiac disease mouse models.

Require previous experience maintaining and analyze mouse colonies for biologic research on the heart. Duties include independent colony maintenance and breeding, assisting with physiologic studies, and analysis of mice post mortem. Port mortem analysis will include PCR and Western Blot analysis of tissue.

Independently perform general lab duties including ordering reagents for stem cell work as well as laboratory maintenance, ordering laboratory supplies; serving as primary contact for vendors, physical plant office personnel, etc. Will provide work direction to undergraduate student workers. Engage in training to learn new techniques.

  • Theoretical knowledge in molecular, cellular, or developmental biology or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

  • Experience with animal work, specifically with mice and IACUC animal protocol.

  • Experience with molecular biological techniques to include DNA (including cloning), RNA isolation and protein preparation, quantification and analysis (western blotting and immunoprecipitation techniques).

  • Demonstrated experience with cell culture techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis using Microsoft tools.

  • Proven experience with basic molecular biology laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, balances, pH meter, etc.

  • Ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook. Strong organizational skills to keep clear and accurate records.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability in using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situation. Ability to work as part of a research team, and interact effectively with collaborating labs and others in scientific community.

  • Proven skill in the preparation of reagents and maintenance of laboratory stocks.

  • Experience supervising and overseeing undergraduate students.
  • Experience with administrative duties such as biosafety, ordering, inventory, etc.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be willing to work in an environment where biological, chemical and radiological hazards are present.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and occasional weekends if necessary as research dictates.
