The Statistician will work as part of two landmark studies:
The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD, https://abcdstudy.org) Study will determine how childhood experiences (such as sports, videogames, social media, unhealthy sleep patterns, and smoking) interact with each other and with a child’s changing biology to affect brain development and social, behavioral, academic, health, and other outcomes. UCSD is one of 21 institutions nationwide that has recruited families to participate in the ABCD Study.
The HEALthy Brain Child Development (HBCD, https://heal.nih.gov/research/infants-and-children/healthy-brain) Study will recruit a large cohort of pregnant women from regions of the country significantly affected by the opioid crisis and follow them and their children through early childhood. The study will collect information beginning at birth and continuing through early childhood, including structural and functional brain imaging; anthropometrics; medical history; family history; biospecimens; and social, emotional, and cognitive development.
The incumbent will assist in the development and enhancement of the Data Exploration and Analysis Portal (DEAP) for both ABCD and HBCD Studies. As part of this endeavor, she or he will develop and implement code in R, Python, and/or MATLAB for statistical analyses. The incumbent will also be responsible for developing applications with the engineering team to facilitate data exploration and analysis using DEAP among consortium members. This includes creating and maintaining code bases for app improvements, new feature development, and debugging.
The incumbent will also support existing and new databases related to DEAP development, including the processing of complex data files, implementing quality control protocols, and automating flagging and cleaning procedures for anomalous data. The incumbent will work closely with the leadership to develop and implement the necessary protocols, processes, and timelines for data linkage, data review and correction, and preparation of the data for analyses on DEAP.
The incumbent will independently identify appropriate statistical approaches, utilizing both traditional and modern methods, perform statistical programming, create data analysis files, and implement data analysis. The incumbent will also create statistical reports and interpret complex analysis results. Experience in statistical methods for longitudinal data (e.g., mixed-effects models) and nonparametric resampling-based approaches (e.g., permutation testing) is advantageous.
