Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the ACAD PRG MGT OFCR 3 or ACAD PRG MGT OFCR 4 level.


The Academic Program Management Officer for the Glycobiology Research and Training Center (GRTC) will manage day-to-day operations of the center including oversight of administrative, programmatic, facilities, educational, and financial activities. Moreover, they will help ensure effective use of space, and maintenance of adequate facilities and operations; and to help to build and maintain effective information systems and websites that serve the Center’s mission. The successful candidate will also oversee the fiscal and administrative matters of the GlycoAnalytics Core recharge facility. In this capacity, they will analyze and update recharge rates, justify budget projections, propose and implement plans for increasing revenue, while ensuring compliance with university recharge facility policies.

The Academic Program Management Officer will coordinate, manage, and/or supervise staff members within the administrative office and serve as the liaison with University leadership. They will advise the Directors on matters of University and program administration, participate in strategic planning of future goals and help procure external funding to support the Center’s activities. They will conduct analyses and engage in creative problem solving to meet the Center's objectives and goals, while acting within the parameters of University policy.

Leads the administration of all finance, facilities and other operational activities for the GRTC, an Operational Research Unit at UC San Diego. Administers major program components, and some or all of the program's operational requirements. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Center Directors or more senior Administrative Officer to establish center agenda, funding, and other objectives.

  • College or advanced degree (BA, MBA, MS, PhD etc.) with advanced training and experience.

  • Three (3+) or more years of relevant experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, and financial principles and practices (advanced knowledge preferred). Experience with current UCSD systems governing these processes is preferred. PhDs willing to deepen their expertise in these areas will receive full consideration.

  • Solid experience with grants and fundraising.

  • Proficient computer skills.

  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.

  • Ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Skilled in conveying creative and administrative concepts in presentations and other work products.

  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse individuals to achieve results.

  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.

  • Terminal degree in a related field preferred.
  • Academic background and experience in Health Science research administration preferred.
  • Previous program management and supervisory experience preferred
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Willingness to work in the proximity of laboratories containing biohazards and radioactive materials.
  • Willingness to work in the proximity of academic conversations of a reproductive and/or sexual nature.
