Transitional Studies

Job Summary/Basic Function::

The Transitional Studies Department has a tenure-track faculty opening to support English Language Acquisition (ELA) and international students enrolled in Intensive English Programs (IEP). The successful candidate will equitably serve these populations and assist in transitioning them to degree seeking pathways.
This position is also responsible for improving and innovating the existing curriculum and serving as a key member of our Transitional Studies/English Language Acquisition professional learning community and ensuring that the overall quality of instruction will be consistently high.

Other specific duties include the following:

  • develop and coordinate curriculum to improve student success and retention;
  • identify and implement procedures/techniques to assess individual student learning, as well as course, program, and college learning outcomes;
  • maintain regularly scheduled office hours for the purpose of assisting, advising, and mentoring students enrolled in history courses;
  • assist with the development of curriculum to meet the changing educational needs of students;
  • collaborate with faculty and staff on department, division and campus-wide projects;
  • participate in all other tasks related to instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College policies.

Minimum Qualifications::

  • A Masters Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language or Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL), a Masters Degree in Education with a focus on English Second Language Learners, or a Masters Degree in a related field.
  • Willingness and ability to effectively communicate with colleagues within the department as well as partners across campus.
  • Ability to effectively advocate for international and ELA population while maintaining accountability to campus, state and federal policies governing these students.
  • Passion for working in a team environment, as well as a predilection to take on leadership roles and mentor other faculty and students.
  • Experience with curriculum development, alignment to institutional, program, and course objectives, and sequencing of courses within the department.
  • Demonstrated experience, and/or classroom strategies for, effectively instructing students from diverse backgrounds including differences in culture, heritage, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, ability, class, and religion.

Preferred Qualifications::

  • Bilingual
  • Experience learning in a foreign language and/or living abroad.
  • Experience teaching in a community college setting.
