Overview

Princeton University, Office of Advancement, department of Alumni Engagement seeks a Director, Affinity Programming to join a team of dedicated professionals.

 

The Director is responsible for developing identity-based alumni engagement strategies with the goal of increasing engagement across underrepresented populations within the University community. The Director leads a high-quality team that supports multiple identity-based alumni organizations and develops and implements programs designed to instill a sense of lifelong engagement.

 

The Director builds and sustains relationships in support of the University’s essential values of diversity, equity and inclusion. This position will also be responsible for strategizing how to identify and develop new alumni affinity groups.

Responsibilities

People Leader

  • Oversees a team responsible for partnering with volunteers to ensure a broad range of programming, communications and events for affinity groups, and other programming, including the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Supervises and develops a high-quality staff, monitors performance and provides coaching and mentoring.

Volunteer Management

  • Responsible for nurturing and maintaining key relationships with leadership of alumni affinity groups including the Association of Black Princeton Alumni (ABPA), the Association of Latino Princeton Alumni (ALPA), the Asian American Alumni Association of Princeton (A4P), the Fund for Reunions/Princeton Bisexual, Transgender, Gay, Lesbian Alumni (FFR/BTGALA), Native Alumni of Princeton (NAP) and the Princeton Women’s Network (PWN).
  • Exercises extraordinary level of judgement, resourcefulness and ingenuity in building relationships with alumni, guiding volunteers through challenging conversations, and mediating differences of opinion.
  • Guides senior volunteer leaders in building strong leadership teams to ensure pipelines for future success.

Strategy,Implementation and Assessment

  • Leads planning and execution of large-scale affinity conferences, with a focus on managing an alumni steering committee consisting of University trustees and senior volunteers. Partners with Advancement Communications and Events on conference budget, marketing, content and implementation.
  • Responsible for tracking success of affinity programming, using consistent metrics and data to assist with long term planning.
  • Provide strategic direction focused on engagement, proactive “customer” service, communication and responsiveness to the needs of Princeton's alumni community.
  • Assess and oversee development of strategies across the alumni engagement spectrum that align with University and University Advancement priorities.
  • Assess the effectiveness of existing programs of alumni outreach and communications to determine what improvements need to be made. Partner with direct reports to ensure goals and objectives are achieved.
  • Partners with colleagues to identify and foster alumni engagement synergies across Advancement and with campus partners (i.e. Alumni Communities, Annual Giving, Athletics, Center for Career Development, Emma Bloomberg Center for Access and Opportunities, etc.)

Leadership

  • Provides expertise to Advancement leadership and interacts with senior level alumni volunteers, including an initial task force that regularly updates University administration and trustees.
  • Represents Advancement as a member of the Senior Diversity Practioners group led by the vice provost for institutional equity and diversity, providing insight on various topics related to the University’s DEI efforts.

Fiduciary

  • Partners with senior leadership to set budget with responsibility for day-to-day financial oversight.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and ten plus years of strongly related experience.
  • Senior level experience in an academic, non-profit or entertainment industry, or similar, setting.
  • Expertise in volunteer management, particularly in areas of recruitment, training and stewardship and in moderating conflict/discussions involving diverse viewpoints
  • A proven history of strong management and leadership skills with the proven ability to maximize the talents of staff.
  • Proven ability to develop and foster relationships with people at all levels of an organization, and to collaborate and influence at a high level.
  • Exceptional written, and oral communication skills, and superb organizational skills; excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills.
  • Goal oriented with strong strategic planning and project management skills necessary to set and monitor progress, to develop plans and timelines, and to measure success toward goals.
  • Strong familiarity with Princeton University, its mission, and its global community of alumni.
  • Discretion, good judgment, and commitment to keep confidential all data related to Princeton and its alumni and donors.
