Position Emphasis:

The Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery will provide strategic leadership and direction for the Division across clinical care, research, education, and operations.  Scope of responsibility will include strategic practice management, business development, provider recruitment and retention, and delivery of outstanding faculty, patient and referring provider service. The Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery has primary responsibility for establishing accountability with providers regarding the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) and the Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO) policies and procedures, operational standards, and quality and service excellence initiatives.  Key member of UCH care delivery leadership team and participates in all strategic discussions and operational planning for their division.

The Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery has responsibility for University programs at affiliated teaching hospitals of the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The CT Division has programs at UCH, the CHCO, the Veterans Administration Medical Center, and other current and potential locations. The Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery will be responsible for academic activities including teaching of medical students, residents and fellows; research; and related service duties. Strong leadership and communication skills with a wide and diverse population are important. 

This position will exhibit the following characteristics/requirements of a Division Chief:

  • Active clinical practice at UCH
  • Member in good standing of Attending/Admitting Staff or Associated Scientific Staff
  • Appointment as full-time academic faculty at The University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM)
Examples of Work Performed:

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  1. Responsible for all clinical activities in Cardiothoracic Surgery
  2. Monitor the professional performance of privileged members in the Division, making recommendations relating to Medical Staff membership and clinical privileges at the time of appointment and reappointment.
  3. Immediately inform the President of the Medical Staff, if the physical and/or mental health status of a member of his/her division comes into question such that the practitioner's ability to provide safe and competent patient care may be jeopardized.
  4. Oversee quality and appropriateness of patient care rendered by providers in their department.
  5. Provide input into and ensure adherence to UCH and CHCO Policies and Procedures.
  6. Attend UCH and CHCO strategic and operational meetings, as requested
  7. Work with administrative partners to optimize, as well as develop and implement plans to improve all clinically related activities of patient care, and patient and family experience
  8. Oversee credentialing and privileging as related to Divisional providers and procedures.
  9. Responsible for developing and overseeing the education and research programs in Adult and Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  10. Responsible for the educational mission of the Division for all learners – medical students, residents, fellows, APP’s, nurses and Faculty
  11. Collaborate on evaluating strategic opportunities for the Division in current and new potential areas for clinical, education and other opportunities that could benefit the Division, Department and School of Medicine.
Fiscal Responsibilities

  1. The Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery will work with their administrative partners to prepare operating budgets and capital budget requests pertaining to their division.
  2. Will suggest and participate in cost savings/productivity strategies to meet or improve the operational budget while maintaining quality service, provider satisfaction, excellent patient outcomes, and patient and referring provider satisfaction.
  3. Report to the Medical Board or other committees as requested
  4. Review monthly financial statements for the Division with their administrative partner and develop action plans for improvement and sustainability.
Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $600,000 to $815,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Education:
  • Doctor of Medicine degree recognized by the General Medical Council
  • 2-6 year cardiothoracic surgery residency program
  • Board Certified in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery
  • Experience:
  • Associate Professor Level or higher with experience in academic leadership
  • Demonstrated educational, clinical, and academic excellence
  • Condition of employment:
  • Ability to obtain a Colorado Medical license
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in research, preferable with independent funding (i.e. NIH)
    • Department or Divisional leadership experience, including serving as chair, chief or vice chair in a surgical department or commensurate leadership experience
    • Demonstrated experience implementing or developing diversity, equity, or inclusion initiatives
