Description
The Office of the General Counsel provides legal advice and representation to the University of Tennessee System, including all campuses and institutes.  This position is in the General Counsel’s main office, which is located in downtown Knoxville in the UT Tower.   The General Counsel’s office is staffed by an experienced and collegial team of attorneys and paralegals. 

This position is responsible for assisting several attorneys with litigation (and litigation-like) activities, including:

    collecting, organizing, managing, and producing both paper and electronic documents, and other legal work for the University.identifying, preserving, collecting, processing, reviewing, and assisting with producing electronically stored information in litigation.drafting, revising, proofreading, and reviewing agreements designed to resolve or avoid litigation.accurately identifying attorney-client privileged documents and attorney work product documents and preparing privilege logs.maintaining databases of privileged legal information, including deadlines in pending cases and indexes of documents requested, collected, reviewed, or produced.researching and summarizing information and proofreading documents for University officials.collecting, compiling, sorting, redacting, and indexing documents for a wide variety of matters effectively and efficiently (not all in active litigation, but using the same skills as litigation discovery).accurately and thoroughly summarizing documents, records, and/or depositions.drafting pleadings and responses to discovery and working with attorneys to finalize for filing.assisting in preparing documents and responses in administrative and regulatory matters, and in preparing for depositions, hearings, and trials.assisting in hearings and trials with digital evidence presentation and preparation of exhibits.maintaining a tickler system of deadlines pursuant to scheduling orders, statutes and/or policies.
The position is responsible for maintaining calendars for several attorneys and working with clients to schedule meetings (as well as space and court reporters as needed).  The position also requires experience and expertise in using the MS Office Suite (including OneDrive) and MS Teams (or ability and willingness to develop those skills right away), as well as PACER, ECF, and other court and agency electronic filing systems.



Qualifications
The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills and will routinely communicate with clients, attorneys, witnesses, courts, and state and federal agencies.  The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently to maintain and track a high volume of files from initial assignment to closure.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of professional integrity, initiative, comfort and flexibility to work with others on site and/or remotely, eagerness to assist our University clients, and a collegial team spirit.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s degree, or paralegal certificate (from an ABA-approved program) is required; provided that ten years of paralegal experience may be deemed an adequate substitute for a degree or certificate. 

Experience:  Three or more years of paralegal experience in litigation is preferred.

Pay Scale Type:  This is a non-exempt position classified as a Market Range 09/Legal Paralegal 1.
