Position Summary:

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct scientific research in support of funded NIH projects on the cellular mechanisms involved in information processing in the central auditory system at the single cell and neural circuit levels. The person in this position will be responsible for independently conducting research using in vitro brain slice electrophysiology from brainstem and/or cortical neurons of juvenile and adult animals using patch clamp recordings, electrical stimulation, optogenetics (laser scanning photostimulation), fluorescence imaging, and 2-photon calcium imaging in mouse models, and in vivo recordings from neurons in the auditory brainstem. Additional participation in computational modeling of auditory circuits will be part of the projects.

Live animal procedures include controlled noise exposure, and measurement of auditory brainstem evoked responses and in vivo unit recordings. Additional standardized procedures used involve rodent handling for behavioral testing, acoustic startle response testing, anesthetic injection, and surgery, as well as histological processing (including both standard histological staining, single and double label immunocytochemistry, and recovery of single stained neurons in brain slices), computer programming for data analysis, and the preparation of figures and text for manuscripts. The person in this position will be required to keep detailed and accurate records of experimental test procedures and results, and present and discuss results with the PI and other lab members. The individual is expected to write and submit manuscripts based on the work in the laboratory and is expected to contribute to writing grants that further support the position, or individual grants for projects that they develop independently. The individual is also expected to be able to train others in the lab on specific procedures with which they have unique experience.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Ph.D. in neuroscience, biomedical/electrical engineering or related field

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

* Previous experience in patch clamp recording in vitro using in brain slices in both voltage and current clamp.
* Appropriate manual and surgical skills for dissection of live brain tissue and performing minor surgical procedures under a dissecting microscope.
* Knowledge of the literature related to the specific research projects in neuroscience in general. An ability to identify, read, evaluate, and discuss current research results from the literature, and to independently formulate testable scientific hypotheses based on the literature and on direct experimental observations.
* Knowledge of central nervous system anatomy at both the gross and cellular level in rodents.
* Ability to program in Python (preferred; Matlab is acceptable) at an intermediate or advanced level.
* Computer skills including self-directed data analysis of electrophysiological data, signal processing, and curve fitting. An ability to develop algorithms for analysis of new kinds of data. Expert familiarity with spread sheets, databases, reference management software, and word processing tools.
* Knowledge of electronics and electronic equipment as related to electrophysiological techniques.
* Knowledge of microscope optics for transmitted light and fluorescence, and optics for alignment of lasers is required for microscopy and related optical approaches.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

* Ability to program in Python (preferred; Matlab is acceptable) at an intermediate or advanced level.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.
