Facilities Management has an opening for a full-time, State Classified Utility Plant Technician position.

Job Summary:
The Utility Plant Technician position (Pipe/Mechanical Trades I classification), assists in Central Utility Plant (CUP) operations and maintenance functions working any assigned shift. This position will assist staff to operate, monitor, service, and repair steam and chilled water equipment, including ancillary systems and participate in all required training programs. The CUP is a 24/7 operation and employee may be expected to work any shift – days, nights, weekends, or holidays.

This apprentice-level position is expected to transition to a fully functioning Stationary Engineer (Utility Plant Operator I) over three years. To be eligible for journeyman status, employee must complete the required utility plant experience, meet expectations of job performance, and successfully complete a written examination to obtain a Stationary Engineer’s license. The individual in this position may shorten the anticipated three-year training if they provide evidence of eligible work experience outside the Central Utility Plant. The promotion to Stationary Engineer (UPO-I) includes an appropriate salary increase and a corresponding eligibility for additional Critical Skills pay.

For applicants that exceed the minimum qualifications and possess the required work experience to demonstrate journeyman status sooner – thereby allowing for a Stationary Engineer’s license – then promotion may be accelerated. The PMT-1 classification is temporary and is intended to lead to promotion to UPO-1 classification.

Examples of Work Performed:

CUP Operations and maintenance (55%)

  • Assist to operate and monitor steam and chilled water systems and equipment. Adjust capacity to meet load. Use digital control to monitor system performance. Provide maintenance functions as required to ensure reliable CUP operation. This work may occur on any assigned shift.
Logs and Water Testing (15%)

  • Assist staff to collect and record temperatures, pressures and flow rates on all systems (hourly), verify shift and daily production goals. Test, analyze and record chemical content in various steam and water systems, follow chemical treatment program guidelines, and adjust chemical dosages/feed rates as necessary.
Training (10%)

    Participate in both CUP-specific hands-on training exercises and technical classroom training sessions. Position engages in training as required to increase plant understanding. Also, when requested, provide assistance in training other plant staff. Instruct other employees in operating, servicing, and calibrating all equipment, systems, operational and equipment changes, and casualty control procedures. Report to supervisor and discuss results regarding conformity of training schedule.
Communication (10%)

  • Collaborate with campus personnel for operating and monitoring the steam, condensate, and chilled water distribution systems.
Miscellaneous Duties (10%)

Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:

  • Reading, interpreting and working from blueprints, plans, technical manuals, and drawings.
  • Service interior and exterior of Central Utility Plant Building.
  • Work under the direction of other journey level crafts on assigned projects.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Hiring Salary Range: $3,851 - $4,287 per month ($46,212 - $51,444 per year)
  • The salary offered is usually the minimum listed, however, a salary above the minimum may be offered for some hard to fill positions and/or in recognition of prior and applicable skills, experience, certifications, etc.
  • This position is eligible for overtime compensation

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of work experience involved in a trade-related field, such as construction, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, building maintenance and repair, automotive mechanic or similar.
  • Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or higher level course work from an accredited, non-correspondence, vocational or trades school appropriate to the work assignment may substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Utility plant experience working with boilers and chillers is desirable.
Competencies:

  • Knowledge of utility plant operations including the operation of high pressure boilers, centrifugal chillers, medium voltage electrical distribution, and associated ancillary equipment.
  • Experience that demonstrates the ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience that demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written form which includes the ability to check for typographical, grammatical and spelling errors
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving skills
