The Facilities Management department has an opening for a full-time, State Classified Refrigeration Technician position.

Job Summary:  The Refrigeration Technician position operates, monitors, services and/or repairs a wide array of refrigeration equipment, HVAC systems, and associated hardware for all CU Denver campus buildings. It responds to emergency calls pertaining to HVAC and refrigeration problems, and emergencies throughout the campus, and ensures the safest and most efficient operation and training of personnel for the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems at CU Anschutz campus.

Examples of Work Performed:

Refrigeration Preventive Maintenance and Repairs  (45%)

  • Complete work requests for preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance and repairs to refrigeration systems. 
  • Inspect, replace, adjust, and calibrate electronic and refrigeration controls, and components. 
  • Install, repair, and replace systems and components for refrigerators, freezers, split systems, multi stack, rotary screw, and centrifugal, process chillers, and ice makers
  • Systems include 4-37 degree environmental rooms, process chillers, and walk-in freezers
  • Operates university vehicle to transport equipment and tools to work sites. 
  • The refrigeration units are critical to the mission of the University and research funding and projects are at stake.
HVAC/R Preventive Maintenance and Repairs (35%)

  • Complete work requests for preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance and repairs to building and occupant owned HVAC/R systems and components. 
  • Install, repair, and replace systems and components for building and occupant owned HVAC/R ventilation, cooling, heating and associated controls. 
  • The position records repairs and maintenance performed in a log and enters data into computer systems which includes package systems, split systems, chillers, CRAC units, AHUs, FCUs, VAVs, etc.
Refrigerant Management (10%)

  • Recover and clean chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s), hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFC’s), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC’s). 
  • Store and reuse all types of CFCs, HCFCS, and HFCs, and be able to use servicing and reclaiming equipment for refrigerants. 
  • Work with and monitor the CFC program. 
  • The position must have the ability to enter, update, and modify information in the database as well as maintain and keep hard-copy records of all refrigerant handling activities. Accurate record keeping is important because the University can be fined by the EPA. 
  • The position must be able to properly use recovery equipment and weigh and accurately record tank tare weights and gross weights. 
  • The position must also have the ability to perform mathematical functions and correctly and accurately calculate amounts used, net-weight from gross-weight, tare weight, etc.
Training and Operating as a Subject Matter Expert (5%) 

  • Provide training and assistance to other employees. 
  • Participate as a member of interview teams in new employee hiring process. 
  • The position will work with the HR Consultant to write interview questions and assess candidates in the hiring process.
Emergencies, Special Events, and Other Duties (5%)

  • Participate and assist in emergencies based on the magnitude and nature. 
  • Support various special events both in preparation and during the event. 
  • Examples of emergencies and special events could include commencement, snow removal, power outage, flood, etc. May be assigned other duties as required.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Hiring Salary Range: $4,823 - $5,283 per month ($57,876 - $63,396 per year)*
  • *The salary offered is usually the minimum listed, however, a salary above the minimum may be offered for some hard to fill positions.
  • The individual in this position may also be eligible for additional pay on top of the base salary, in recognition of certain critical skills and/or certifications. 
  • This position may be eligible for a one time non-base building sign-on bonus up to $2,000.  Details of this recruitment incentive program will be provided during the interview process.

Qualifications
Please make sure to include the following in your resume: job title, duties, months and years employed, and average hours per week worked as minimum experience is calculated on a 40 hour/week basis. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a current EPA Universal Certification
  • At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry.
Substitution:

    Successful completion of a formalized heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration apprenticeship program, or higher level, non- correspondence course work in the same fields from an accredited vocational school or university may substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis
Preferred Qualifications:

    At least four years of experience in the HVACR industries.Commercial HVACR experience. Experience with medium and/or low temperature refrigeration applications. Experience working on chillers. Experience with large motor and bearing repairs – 10HP and above.
