Faculty in the Biology and Chemistry disciplines are highly engaged in promoting science education and careers, and are actively involved in supporting the community environment. Faculty have received numerous state and federal grants to support such programs as the Bee Campus, Butterfly Project, and S-Stem Scholars. They also work extensively with community partners to support science and research focused internship opportunities. Biology and Chemistry faculty have presented at regional, state, and national conferences. Faculty support student success through an emphasis on multi-modal teaching to meet students’ diverse learning styles. Faculty focus on student engagement and success through critical thinking, analytical and hands-on approaches. Faculty serve on discipline work-groups in order to have consistent, effective, and current teaching; therefore, the faculty member must be able to work well with others and implement decisions made by the group. Faculty work in the lab and must be aware of proper safety procedures, such as the use of dissection instruments and disposal of hazardous materials. Faculty must be able to collaborate with the laboratory staff (technicians and coordinators) to ensure that adequate supplies are available and handled appropriately.

Faculty are expected to be knowledgeable of learning management systems in addition to face-to-face and innovative technology-based instructional delivery approaches.

As such, we are seeking an innovative educator to join our science faculty. This faculty position focuses on teaching of lecture and/or labs for Anatomy and Physiology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.

The College of Southern Maryland is an ardent supporter of professional development and offers a robust professional development program for and investment in its faculty. Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe successful faculty member will teach 15 credit hours per semester and 30 credit hours per academic year of day, evening or weekend classes. Flexibility is required to work in this position as teaching assignments may vary from semester to semester. There is an expectation for summer teaching with this position. Faculty may be assigned to teach on the La Plata campus or any campus or center where CSM offers classes. The faculty member hired in this position is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning and success. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, contributing to student learning outcomes assessment processes, and demonstrating a commitment to professional development through participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.

  • Teach 30 credits of courses per contract year in the Biology and Chemistry disciplines with an emphasis on Anatomy and Physiology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.
  • Teach a range of courses that may include morning, day, evening, weekend or online, in an accelerated format. There is an expectation for summer teaching with this position.
  • Design assignments that incorporate students’ program of study and connect to the Biology and Chemistry disciplines
  • Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approaches
  • Meet with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college students
  • Incorporate culturally relevant pedagogies into the teaching and learning process
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret information
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver instruction to diverse student populations, with varied levels of learning and preparation
  • Knowledge and use of student engagement strategies that support completion and student success goals
  • Demonstrated experience providing feedback students can use to improve their performance
  • Experience developing or using Open Education Resource (OER) materials as an instructional tool
  • Maintain an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences and activities
  • Mastery of appropriate computer operation skills
  • Operate a motor vehicle for travel to other campuses Minimum Education and TrainingMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED:

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or closely related field, with 18 graduate credit hours in Biology and Chemistry coursework, Required
  • Earned Doctorate in Biology, Chemistry, or related field, Preferred
  • One year of college-level teaching experience at the community college level, preferred.
  • One year of instructional experience at the post-secondary level, that includes teaching courses, conducting and managing learning experiences, evaluating student achievement, providing input into curriculum development, policy and procedure formulation, and evaluation of program effectiveness at the community college level, preferred.
  • Two years of professional experience in Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related field, required.
  • Ability to use word processing, basic internet applications, and basic database navigation
  • Ability to use an educational enterprise, learning management system such as MyLearning to support and facilitate instructional delivery
  • Ability to teach in face-to-face, virtual, web and web-hybrid formats.
