The primary responsibility of a Child Development Instructor is to teach a variety of college-level courses on the Main Campus, Sunnyvale Campus, online or as a hybrid, during the evening, daytime or asynchronous. These courses fulfill general education requirements, or count towards the Associate of Arts degree in Child Development, AS-T in Early Childhood Education, AA-T in Child and Adolescent Development and possibly for the AA-T in Elementary Teacher Education (if additionally qualified).
Provide classroom instruction in accordance with established course outlines while using comparative cross-cultural, multicultural, and multidisciplinary perspectives.
Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.
Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.Master’s in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education, or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies OR the equivalent.
- Experience in teaching in an Early Childhood Education setting (children ages 0-8).
- Experience in the Administration and Supervision of Early Childhood Education Programs, experience working with children with special needs or experience in elementary education including Transitional Kindergarten.
- Advocacy in the field of early childhood education, and active participation on local and/or statewide child development communities.
- Successful experience teaching students of ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds at the community college level.
- Experience and/or strong interest in teaching courses online, and a willingness to teach over Zoom if necessary.
- Initiative and ability to develop courses.
- Commitment to the mission of the community college and its philosophy of education.

HIRING RANGE: $60,490.00 - $99,345.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant’s verified education and experience.
