The Office of Advancement has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Senior Development Writer position.

Jobs in this career family involve development, marketing and management of messaging to both internal and external parties. Functions include marketing; advertising; communications; publications; brand management; writing; editing; proofreading; graphic design; web information architecture, development and design; web content development; electronic communications; social media; news media/relations; public relations; photography; videography; radio/television broadcasting; FCC compliance; and communication projects management.

Senior Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.  Work is performed fully independently.

Job Summary:

The Senior Development Writer researches and writes for a diverse array of materials in support of strategic fundraising and engagement initiatives. Deliverables include custom correspondence, impact reports, talking points, proposals, presentations, web content and other communications aimed at inspiring new or continued philanthropy and/or involvement.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Writes content for print and online publications.
  • Serves as a primary developer of content for advancement website, and tracks web analytics to inform content strategy and frequency of updates.
  • Must be able to handle a variety of projects independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Conducts research and independently incorporates changes, comments and critiques from multiple reviewers using exceptional writing and editing skills; exercises sound judgment with regard to strategy, appropriate points of emphasis, and persuasive impact.
  • Describes complex medical matters in clear, persuasive language and presents concise rationales for philanthropy.
  • Writes and/or edits content for event collateral (save the dates, event remarks, invitations, print programs, signage, stories, slide decks, etc.).
  • Collaborates with colleagues in alumni relations, marketing and communications, system-level advancement and elsewhere across CU to create communications that uphold CU messaging, tone, style and brand guidelines.
  • Works collaboratively with advancement colleagues, as well as donors, faculty, students, volunteers and outside vendors.
  • Maintains a clear understanding of all advancement and fundraising goals, strategies and messages, as well as keeps up-to-date on campus developments and accolades. Articulates this information appropriately and effectively.
  • Various other duties or tasks as assigned and/or needed.

Salary and Benefits:

  • The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $49,673 - $70,000
  • The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
  • The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
  • This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Minimum Qualifications:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism or a related fieldAt least three (3) years of experience writing in a professional settingApplicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience writing materials in support of fundraising and advancement efforts (e.g. white papers, case statements, brochures, newsletters, web content and other communications)Experience in advancement, higher education and/or healthcare industriesExperience working with different media forms, such as videoExperience with Adobe Creative CloudExperience with digital communications tasks such as broadcast email, website content management systems, and analyticsExperience researching content and generating ideas through interviews, online searches and other information-gathering mechanismsExperience developing event remarks and collateral

    Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Internet navigation tools.Strong and demonstrated ability to write and edit compelling, clear and accurate content to diverse audiences.Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities in a fast-paced environment.Basic understanding of marketing and news principles and landscape.Fluency with AP or Chicago style.Demonstrated ability to organize and complete complex projects, and to work under tight deadlines.Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with donors, staff, faculty and students.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Ability to work independently as well as collaborate as part of a team.
