The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus invites applications for the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Bioengineering.  Successful candidates will be senior engineers and educators with demonstrated experience and capability to: 1) lead a fast-growing and exceptionally translational program to the next stage of success; 2) mentor and engage a highly collaborative and entrepreneurial group of faculty and students; and 3) develop and execute on an ambitious vision for programmatic growth across research, training, entrepreneurship, and service in bioengineering, centered as a dual-campus program on the world-renowned University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus with strategic ties to the rapidly expanding University of Colorado Denver Campus.  Candidates should have an exceptional record of collaborative leadership in research, education and service, and must be eligible to be appointed as a full professor with tenure at the University of Colorado. The successful candidate is expected to develop an innovative and dynamic research program at the intersection of bioengineering and clinical / biomedical fields.  Candidates with experience in building successful translational programs that bridge engineering and medicine will find an exceptionally rewarding atmosphere within and outside the department.  The successful candidate will also be expected to lead and expand the department’s trajectory and commitment to supporting equity, diversity and inclusion in bioengineering and related fields. 

About the Department:  The department was founded in 2010 as a cross-campus program that spans the Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses of the University of Colorado.  Since its founding, the department has grown rapidly across multiple areas, and now houses an exceptional research funding portfolio, strong training programs including two T32 grants, and commitment to entrepreneurship and translating discoveries and inventions to the clinic as evidenced by the submission of over 150 patent applications and creation of 10 startup companies by department faculty and students.  The department has its primary research and teaching facilities on the Anschutz Medical Campus, the largest academic medical campus between Chicago and the West Coast, which houses the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and the Graduate School, the Children’s Hospital of Colorado, the University of Colorado Hospital, and the new Veteran’s Administration Hospital.  It also houses the rapidly-growing Fitzsimons Innovation District which brings academic, clinical and industry programming together in a campus focused on translation and innovation.   Bioengineering faculty and students collaborate with all of these groups; exceptional opportunities exist to further build and expand these collaborations.

Position Description:  Reporting to the dean of the College of Engineering, Design and Computing, the chair of the Department of Bioengineering provides leadership for the teaching, research, and service mission of the department.  The department chair is expected to work collaboratively and collegially with a close-knit group of clinical and basic science chairs and center directors in the School of Medicine and the College of Engineering, Design and Computing.  The position also requires significant collaboration and interaction with stakeholders on the Anschutz Medical Campus including deans, chairs, center directors, and hospital leadership to promote and amplify the department’s interests and ambitions and, significantly contribute to the goals and ambitions of the campuses. 

Primary responsibilities of the chair are to:

    Provide leadership to develop and implement vision and strategy for the department to continually strengthen its teaching, research, and student support; lead efforts to strengthen equity, diversity, and inclusion; enhance collaboration with programs across the College of Engineering, Design and Computing, the School of Medicine, and across the campuses in general; amplify industry engagement; and increase the department’s regional and national visibility and reputation.  The department’s strategy will align with and contribute to strategies of the college and CU Denver and CU Anschutz campuses.Lead the department to strategically grow undergraduate and graduate enrollment in degree and other credentialing programs through retention and contemporary curriculum/program development efforts that leverage investments in technology and human capital across campus.Lead and grow fundraising for departmental activities, identifying and pursuing opportunities to expand and diversify revenue streams; develop a strong industry advisory council that advises and advocates for the department and contributes to resource generation.Facilitate a collaborative culture and environment for research in the department with active collaborations with academia, industry, and government agencies; foster productive interdisciplinary relationships with entities across the college and CU Denver and CU Anschutz communities.Oversee management of the department, with budgetary responsibilities for strategic, academic, and operational development. Promote and support continued professional growth of faculty and staff, particularly in the areas of research program development and educational innovation.Administer and lead the continual refresh and renewal of curricula, delivery methods, and teaching activities of academic and adjunct faculty.Represent the department to the university administration, other university units, industry, and to public and private agencies at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Keep abreast of the cutting edge in bioengineering education and professional expectations of bioengineers.Oversee recruitment of faculty and staff, and facilitate professional development, and retention of faculty, staff, and students.Contribute to the teaching and graduate mentoring activities in the department.
Salary: The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $150,000 - $220,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Medicine, or related fields.
  • A record to quality for a tenured, full-professor appointment in the Department of Bioengineering.
  • A proven, successful track record in research, teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level, and service to the university and the bioengineering profession.
  • Demonstrated high ethical standards and a track record of operating in a collaborative, transparent, and collegial way.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • A research and teaching record of marked distinction and impact.
  • Strong administrative experience and leadership and evidence of successful personnel and financial management.
  • A strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Experience with ABET accreditation and related program review processes. A strong commitment to supporting the strategic plans and ambitions of the college and the CU Denver and CU Anschutz campuses, and leading the department to play a pivotal role to this end.
