Minimum Qualifications:

Position Summary:

The PI will delegate planning tasks to the Research Professional I and they will implement independently.
Independently and/or in collaboration with the principal investigator, organize and assist in implementation of research projects including data collection, animal care and overall project management, word processing and data management as related to preparation of manuscripts, protocols, and presentations, supervision of students and junior technician. The individual will also be responsible for maintenance of laboratory supply inventory. Maintain accurate records with every aspect of research projects. Assist with anesthetic delivery and management for a variety of surgical and/or diagnostic procedures on common domestic and laboratory species.
Coordinate clinical trials involving client-owned animals. Perform competent sample collection, IV catheter placement, and intubation skills in a variety of species. Ensure the successful recovery of post sedation/anesthesia patients. Accurate maintenance of controlled drug logs and patient clinical health records. Order and maintain supplies for various research projects. Maintenance and care of research related equipment/instruments. Knowledge of drug handling, usage (both indications and contraindications) and dosage calculations. Animal care including daily monitoring of physical health/well-being, administering treatments, and sample collection (such as blood, urine and feces). The individual in this position is responsible to develop and apply laboratory assays to address assigned scientific questions. Assays may include cell culture, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, real time PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and molecular biology techniques. Training will be provided as appropriate in these techniques. The individual will report to the supervisor, but also communicate regularly with one or more principle investigators through participation in rounds (animal case discussions) and laboratory meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Experience and/or willingness to handle multiple species of animals including but not limited to canine, feline and rodent species. Ability to work productively and independently with periodic interaction with the principal investigator. Must meet the physical demands of the position, which include but are not limited to, prolonged standing, crouching or kneeling, lifting heavy patients. Ability to effectively communicate, maintain accurate documentation, and pay attention to detail. Ability to work in a sometimes-stressful environment. Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills while carrying out instructions. Maintain a high degree of confidentiality, while providing consultation to a variety of stakeholders
Basic computer knowledge in MSWord and Excel.

1. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
2. May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
3. Must be capable of dealing with stressful situations.
4. Must be capable of manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
5. Must be capable of wearing all protective gear, including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles.
6. May need to work for long periods of time with arms extended.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Independently organize and implement/conduct research projects, including data collection and project management. Ability to read and develop basic understanding of research project protocols. Maintain accurate records with every aspect of research projects. Word processing and data management, including entry of laboratory data into spreadsheets or databases, preparation of graphs for publication or presentations, preparation of manuscripts and animal use protocols, conducting literature searches, and basic statistical analysis. Prepare data reports for or present results to sponsors.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Animal care includes daily monitoring of physical health/well-being, administering treatments, and management. Coordinate clinical trials involving client-owned cases. Collection of blood by venipuncture, and urine by expression or cystocentesis. Collection and preparation of tissue, cellular, or microbiological samples. Perform routine laboratory test procedures and intradermal tests as well as evaluate video recordings. Ability to perform intravenous and arterial catheterization. Administration and application of treatments, drugs, fluids, medications and immunological agents by oral, parenteral and injectable routes. Clinical health record keeping.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Independently and/or in collaboration with the principal investigator develop and apply laboratory procedures; for example, cell culture, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, real time PCR, ELISA and/or immunohistochemistry. This weight of this task may fluctuate between 10% and 25% and in such cases, the time committed to other tasks will decrease or increase accordingly.

Train and supervise undergraduate students, veterinary students, graduate students, and junior technical staff working in the laboratory. Perform inventory, basic maintenance and ordering of laboratory supplies and equipment. Any other duties as assigned.
