Departmental Overview

Berkeley Public Health (BPH) aims to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research. Established in 1943, BPH is a professional school on the UC Berkeley campus that comprises six academic divisions and nearly 30 research centers and programs. This position involves duties on research projects at Health Research for Action, an affiliated research center at the School of Public Health. Our goal is to reduce health disparities. We specialize in research and resources to meet the literacy and communications needs of diverse audiences.

Our services:
  • Health Literacy & Communications - Health information and health care are becoming more complex. For people with limited literacy skills, the challenge can be overwhelming. Lack of understanding can lead to poor health outcomes, excess hospitalization, and increased costs.
  • Public Health Policy & Planning - Health Research for Action works with many partners to promote policies that improve health and positively shape our communities. Through our studies, periodical, policy briefings and stakeholder meetings, we advance changes in health systems, regulations, and public programs.
  • New & Traditional Media - New Media—the merging of traditional media with interactive computer-enabled consumer devices and the Internet—has become integrated into the lives of billions. Effective New Media for health needs to be innovative, engaging, and easy-to-use.
  • State, Federal, & International Initiatives - Americans need good information, on exercise, parenting, health care, and many other issues. We help you develop large-scale multi-media campaigns based on best practices in health communication.
  • Populations - At HRA, we work with a wide variety of populations in conducting research and developing resources. We develop collaborative relationships with community groups serving specific populations.
  • Research & Evaluation - HRA's team includes epidemiologists, medical sociologists, gerontologists, and specialists in health literacy and translational research. We employ a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods to create the most effective research designs.

Responsibilities

Data collection and data entry
    Submit data from interviews/surveys into R, Excel, Qualtrics, or Dedoose. Manage and monitor study participants in Excel; prepare tracking logs for intervention/clinical trials projects and cross check and “clean” data entered into Excel and import to statistics program (R is the program used). Organize, manage, and secure hard copies of any project materials including surveys, interview transcripts and notes, consent forms, and tracking forms used for project (and securely archiving). Update team on data during weekly project team meetings. Create summary templates or tables with researchers to present preliminary findings. Create slides summarizing results in Powerpoint. Assist researchers to conduct in person or via telephone interviews/data collection in Qualtrics including programming surveys into Qualtrics. Assist with reports and manuscript preparation, including review of literature and linking references including Endnote bibliography software use.

Coordination of project tasks
    Coordinate dates and times for meetings and conference calls. Assist with IRB submissions. Manage processes for recruitment on studies including recruitment phone line, consenting processes, and tracking of a longitudinal cohort. Meet regularly with project directors/PIs, center researchers, and graduate student. Supervise and work with undergraduate URAP students working in the field. Meet with community partners or funders. Work with PIs and research team to prepare reports to funders.

Required Qualifications
  • Highly motivated and responsible.
  • Excellent communicator who enjoys working as part of a team.
  • Experience using and learning various computer software programs such as: R, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Qualtrics, Dedoose, internet programs, web-based programs, and Endnote or Zotero bibliography program.
  • Experience with Mac and PC platforms.
  • Skilled with or ability to learn literature review by searching for materials on the Web or through UCB library site (e.g., PubMed, Web of Science).
  • Ability to review and write up results of articles found from searches.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of project management software (we use Asana).
  • Ability to work under pressure in response to deadlines across 3-4 projects.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks according to multiple deadlines and importance.
  • Timely reporting to supervisors of projects.

Education/Training
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent training or experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Licenses/Certifications
    Desire previous CITI human subjects research training and certification (biomedical CITI is required for one of the projects).

Education/Training
  • Master's degree in public health. Prior work on a research team for 3-4 years, including coordination for team projects for at least one year or equivalent training or experience.
  • Experience in both descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis (Student t, ANOVA, Chi square testing).
  • Qualitative coding knowledge important (we will train on software).
  • Fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, or another Asian language a plus!
  • Quantitative analysis skillset.

Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience within the range of $26.82-$27.34 (Step 2.0-Step 3.0).

Other Information
  • This is a career, 85% part-time, 34-hours per week appointment, eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This is a remote-friendly position, eligible for 65% remote capability.
  • This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Research Support Professionals Unit (RX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE).
