Description:

NOTE: THE APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MAY 24, 2022

The Department of Medical Imaging of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is recruiting a fellowship-trained vascular / interventional radiologist to join three similarly trained physicians as a clinician-teacher or clinician-investigator. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2022.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC) is a fully affiliated hospital of the University of Toronto. Key hospital programs include Trauma (Sunnybrook’s trauma unit is Canada’s first and largest), Cancer (country’s second largest), Heart, Veterans, Women & Babies, Bone & Joint, Rehab, Brain Sciences, Integrated Community, and Precision Diagnostics & Therapeutics. The Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) Division plays a major role in supporting these programs as well as Sunnybrook’s busy Nephrology and Thromboembolism services.

VIR procedural practice at Sunnybrook is diverse, with a heavy emphasis on trauma and oncology. Trauma embolization includes targets in the pelvis and solid viscera. Oncology relies heavily on regional cancer therapy including various thermal ablative approaches (liver, kidney, lung), chemoembolization (including DEBIRI, DEBDOX and cTACE), bland embolization, and radioembolization. Additional areas include biliary and gastrointestinal interventions (feeding tubes, drainage and stenting), GU interventions, thrombolysis (venous, pulmonary, arterial, dialysis access), women / fertility including treatment of fibroids (UAE, HIFU), FTC, gonadal vein embolization (varicocele, pelvic congestion), vertebroplasty (including RFA assisted), osteoplasty and venous access. Peripheral vascular work is done but is not a focus of this division. Diagnostic work includes non neuro CTA, MRA and pre / post fibroid treatment MR.

Image-guided therapy is a strategic initiative at Sunnybrook and provides ample opportunity for research.

The department has three Angio suites: Philips Allura FD 20 equipped with Clarity, Flexview and XperCT / XperGuide, Philips Allura FD 20 equipped with XperCT / XperGuide and Philips Allura FD20/10 Biplane (upgraded to Clarity). A fourth biplane suite will be operational by April 2023. The hospital has recently built a hybrid OR equipped with a single plane Philips Azurion system.

The qualified applicant should be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto, hold a Fellowship in Diagnostic Imaging from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent, and have completed a fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology. Proficiency in key aspects of Interventional Oncology (in particular liver-directed therapy and thermal ablation) is considered to be essential.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated excellence in research and / or education and a commitment to teaching students, residents and fellows. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. The base starting salary will be $300,000 per annum for a full-time equivalent (FTE, 5 days / week plus call evenings and weekends) with opportunity for increased salary commensurate with experience and academic credentials.

Qualified candidates should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae and three references to Dr. Sean Symons, Radiologist-in-Chief, Department of Medical Imaging, c/o Kimberly Wong, Executive Assistant, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Rm. MG-161, 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, Ontario Canada M4N 3M5; e-mail: kimberly.wong@sunnybrook.ca.

The closing date for applications is March 1, 2022 but will remain open until filled.
