General Summary

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

Highline College (HC) is seeking qualified applicants for one full-time, tenure track faculty position in Criminal Justice. The successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to use equity-minded approaches to teaching and learning for racially, ethnically, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse students, including designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline(s) or program(s). 

 

Candidates should be able and excited to teach courses in Criminal Justice and related topics. Full time faculty teach an equivalent of 15 credits per quarter.  Teaching assignments may include evening/weekend, on-line, hybrid, virtual (Zoom) and off-campus sections.  Other duties expected of this position include:

 

  • Mentor and assist adjunct faculty teaching in the criminal justice department;

  • Participate in department, division, and other college activities, including college governance and college-wide initiatives;

  • Participate in faculty development opportunities related to discipline, program, and/or methods of teaching; 

  • Participate in advisory committee meetings, promote effective advisory committee participation, and nominate and orient new department members to these committees;

  • Develop, assess, and analyze student achievement of course learning outcomes with goal of enhancing and improving student learning;  

  • Regularly participate with department colleagues in creating the annual assessment report;

  • Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes and fully participate in the college’s program improvement/program review process;

  • Complete other related duties and special projects as assigned.

DID YOU KNOW? Highline College is in the process of implementing guided pathways as a campus-wide transformation strategy designed to improve student success and decrease equity gaps. HC received a federally funded, five-year Title III grant in October 2020 designed to support our guided pathways work. HC is also developing a new Equity-First Strategic Plan with broad campus participation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Please address the following in your application. If you don’t have experience in an academic setting, please address within the framework of your professional experience:

  • Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning;

  • Provide on-campus and/or online instruction in the criminal justice department designed to promote effective learning;

  • Remain current in trends and developments affecting criminal justice in our society. Participate in the design, assessment, review and revision of courses, where appropriate, in response to developments in the field;

  • Advise students in planning their educational programs and in selecting courses; pursue appropriate professional development activities related to advising;

  • Collaborate and share in the development of learning resources;

  • Create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success;

  • Update degree and certificate programs to be reflective of current industry needs.

Faculty-wide skills and abilities

  • Adopt and use equity-minded approaches to teaching and learning for all students, including designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline(s) or program(s);

  • Demonstrate commitment to student learning including planning, organizing, and creating an interactive, cooperative, and mutually respectful learning environment incorporating research-based practices to teaching and assessment;

  • Encourage students to ask questions, confront limits, recognize complexities, think critically, and challenge assumptions;

  • Convey information and expectations clearly, listening carefully, encouraging students to communicate, and acting with respect, enthusiasm, and empathy toward students;

  • Demonstrate personal and professional integrity, including being professional, honest, and ethical in the selection and delivery of course content; 

  • Establish and maintain respectful, ethical, and professional relationships with students and colleagues;

  • Demonstrate cultural responsiveness in interactions with students and co-workers, and within the community. 

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have, or ability to obtain, a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice, or related field by September 2022.  Related fields may include law, education, sociology, psychology, anthropology, criminology, or political science with relevant coursework and/or fieldwork.  Relevant fieldwork not clearly identified on transcripts should be clearly outlined in a separate addendum; AND

  • Teaching or related work experience. Teaching experience, which may include previous community college, university, K-12, graduate school, teaching assistant, and/or substitute teaching, professional or continuing education including coaching or training; AND

  • One (1) year of work experience within the Criminal Justice system, which may include working in law enforcement, corrections, in the court system or within a related social service agency.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working with community partners and conducting outreach;

  • Fluency in one or more languages other than English; 

  • Understanding of current issues facing the Criminal Justice system, for example racial disproportionality, juvenile detention and the defund movement;

  • Significant experience working in multicultural/diverse environments with an equity-minded focus.

 

 

Supplemental Information

 

SALARY, CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT, APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

A standard 170-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year. This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.

 

This is a union represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. Salary, retirement, medical and insurance benefits are provided in accordance with state regulations and may be subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements. Conditions of Employment:

Prior to employment, the candidate must complete a sexual misconduct declaration form, and pass a sexual misconduct check.

 

If hired you will be required to provide proof that you are either 1) a U.S. citizen, or 2) an immigrant whose status permits you to lawfully work in this country.

 

Completion of academic degree(s) will be verified through receipt of official transcripts at the time of hire.

 

Highline College does require COVID-19 vaccinations for all students, staff and faculty –– with waivers for specific exemptions –– for those who physically attend courses, operations, or other in-person activities. This decision was made in accordance with higher higher education proclamation  20-12.4. A candidate will not be asked to report their vaccination status unless they are hired by the college. If a candidate chosen for hiring is not fully vaccinated from COVID-19 and plans to submit a medical or religious exemption to this employment condition, the hiring process will be suspended until a decision has been made regarding any exemption application which is submitted. A candidate will not be allowed to do any work for Highline College or be onboarded as a new employee during the time period when the exemption is being considered. The request for an exemption does not guarantee approval.
