Job Summary/Basic Function:

Job Summary: : The Residence Director position reports to the Assistant Director for Residence Life and is a 12-month live-in position that includes a fully furnished two-bedroom apartment. Lamar University is seeking a highly motivated, professional applicant to oversee a 500-bed residence hall located on our beautiful 300-acre Lamar University campus. This position creates and develops an exemplary living experience for our student residents at our on-campus residence hall that showcases apartment-style housing. Responsibilities include selection, training, and supervision of student staff to include Resident Assistants and Desk Assistants. The position also includes planning and executing quality, focused programming; promoting community interaction and student engagement; advising hall council and/or RHA; administering penalties for housing contract violations; adjudicating student conduct cases; supporting student retention efforts through academic initiatives and responding to emergency and crisis situations; and overall day-to-day operation of one 500-bed residence hall. This position is full time, unique, and dynamic day to day. Essential Job Functions:
Duties and Responsibilities: Assist with the evacuation process of residence students to an off-site location for tropical storm or hurricane. This position is classified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act and a responsible employee under Title IX. Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university.

Staff Selection & Development:
· Train, supervise, and motivate a staff of 6 to 8 Resident Assistants (RAs) and a staff of Desk Assistants (DAs)
· Coordinate weekly staff meetings with RAs at which information is communicated, ongoing training is offered, and team-building opportunities are provided
· Conduct weekly or bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with RAs
· Coordinate monthly all-staff in-services in conjunction with other professional staff
· Monitor and maintain an in-hall duty rotation system
· Oversee the management of a programming budget
· Assist in the recruitment and selection of new student staff
· Empower RA staff to resolve roommate conflicts, serving as a resource in the establishment of roommate contract agreements to mediate conflict

Community Development:
· Responsible for all social media contact with students concerning Housing & Residence Life.
· Reports to the Director of Housing & Residence Life on social media outreach to students.
· Monitor and provide support and guidance in the implementation of a programming model put forth by the Office of Residence Life
· Support the mission of the Office of Residence Life through purposeful programming initiatives
· Support the academic mission of Lamar University
· Attend and support hall programs, maintaining visibility throughout the hall community
· Create and maintain an environment conducive to respect for the environment and for one another
· Adjudicate student conduct cases as designated by the Dean of Students and Director of Housing & Residence Life
· Serve as a staff member from April-August in assisting with New Student Orientation program.
· Coordinate the assignment/move-in/out processes of summer residential camps.

Administration/Hall Operations:
· Maintain an accurate roster of residents that is up-to-date at all times, coordinating occupancy verifications monthly
· Serve on various committees as requested or approved by the Director of Residence Life
· Attend Residence Life staff training at the beginning of each fall and spring semester
· Process paperwork in a timely manner in accordance with all policies and procedures
· Issue violation notices and fine letters for housing and handbook violations
· Create and manage the work schedules of RAs and DAs to maintain office/desk coverage
· Meet one-on-one weekly with Director of Residence Life
· Coordinate hall openings and closings
· Facilitate room changes
· Coordinate monthly health and wellness checks

Facilities Management/Summer Responsibilities:
· Conducting thorough room-to-room maintenance inspections throughout the summer
· Inputting work orders into a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
· Maintain open lines of communication with Facilities Management staff
· Conduct fire drills in conjunction with Risk Management

Other Duties/Responsibilities:
· Serve on an a professional and para-professional 24-hour on-call rotation for emergency situations that arise after-hours, weekends, including some holidays
· Other duties as assigned by the Director of Housing & Residence Life Principle

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Education Required: Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education is required.

Minimum Experience Required: One year paraprofessional or professional experience in working in higher education residence life.

Physical Requirements: Moderate physical activity. Can require handling objects of average-weight up to 30 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day. Willingness to work flexible schedule, which may include evening and weekend hours as required and emergency management and/or crisis management. Willing to assist with the evacuation process of residence students to an off-site location for tropical storm or hurricane.

· Must be able to remain in stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
· Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on computer and/or related office equipment.
· Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.
· Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
· Communicating with others to exchange information.

Job Conditions: Frequent prolonged and irregular hours.

Athletics

Students can participate in or cheer on their peers in more than a dozen NCAA Division I sports. Last year, the Cardinals were Southland Conference champions in men's golf, cross country and women's tennis. The volleyball and men's basketball teams were regular season co-champs and the women's basketball team was Southland Conference East Division champion. The LU baseball program has produced several major leaguers. The women's soccer program is entering its second season. The golf team has topped national rankings in recent years.

LU is beginning to rebuild a football program. A coach was hired in 2008. The stadium and athletic complex are being renovated, and the Cardinals plan to return to the gridiron in 2010.

Campus Life

A building boom at Lamar University in the past decade has given students access to state-of-the art facilities for learning, playing, dining and living.

Residents of Cardinal Village, the modern residence halls, have private bedrooms, high-speed Internet and amenities including an outdoor pool, basketball courts and community centers. The new dining hall offers a bistro ambience with international and American cuisine.

Working out in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center is like a trip to an exclusive gym where students have an automatic membership. Features include a 43-foot climbing wall, an elevated jogging track, new cardiovascular and weighttraining equipment, and courts for sports such as basketball, racquetball and indoor soccer. Competitive types can participate in intramural sports ranging from basketball and flag football to dodgeball, cricket and pool.

Making friends and building a social network is easy at Lamar with more than 100 clubs and organizations registered on campus. Through campus organizations, students can:

  • Delve into a cause
  • Nurture spiritual beliefs
  • Start networking in future professions
  • Do all of the above.

LU is a short drive from many outdoor adventures: a day at the beach, canoeing or fishing on area rivers and bayous, hiking in the Big Thicket National Preserve. Shopping and entertainment options also are nearby including theaters, museums and live music venues large and small.

History

Lamar University was founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College a few blocks from the current location. The name changed to Lamar College in 1932 to honor Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas and the "Father of Education" in Texas. In 1951, the school became Lamar State College of Technology, a state-supported four-year institution, the first junior college in Texas to make such a transition. The name changed to Lamar University in 1971. The university joined the Texas State University System in 1995.
