Thriving Community Fund
Scope of Work
The Thriving Community Fund is a vision of the Equitable Economic Advancement Collaborative (EEAC), created in the wake of COVID-19. The EEAC recognized the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on BIPOC-owned businesses in Durham, NC. To address this issue, the EEAC began to raise funds for an entrepreneurship program aimed at supporting food business development in Durham among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) entrepreneurs. The goal is to build their own businesses while also growing a collective infrastructure in Durham for BIPOC food entrepreneurs. The first cohort of Thrive Fund was selected in fall 2021.
Members of the collaborative include Communities in Partnership (CIP), End Poverty Durham, Episcopalians United Against Racism, Dr. Henry McKoy of North Carolina Central University and the Angel Fund, and Dr. Keith Daniels of Resilient Ventures. The fund is housed and administered by Communities in Partnership, with technical support provided by the Duke University World Food Policy Center, the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship at the Fuqua School of Business, and the North Carolina Central University
School of Hospitality Management.
Support is needed to retrospectively document the process of the Thriving Community Fund including, but not limited to:
- Concept creation
- Partner agreements and commitments
- Communications
- Grantee application and selection process
- Operations and Management
- Technical Assistance provision
The work will consist of review of existing materials as well as interviews with EEAC members, TA providers, and Thrive Grantees. Deliverable is a written process overview and analysis, with specifics to be determined by the Thriving Community Fund director at
Communities in Partnership and the Director of Strategic Initiatives at Duke World Food Policy Center.
This is a 10-hour per week position for spring 2022. Supervisor will be the Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Duke World Food Policy Center.

Organization
Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B. Duke, created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.
As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent both physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus became known as East Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian architecture. West Campus, Gothic in style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. East Campus served as home of the Woman's College of Duke University until 1972, when the men's and women's undergraduate colleges merged. Both men and women undergraduates now enroll in either the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering. In 1995, East Campus became the home for all first-year students.
Duke maintains a historic affiliation with the United Methodist Church.
