The Office of Research Administration (ORA) manages the administrative processes related to the entire lifecycle of sponsored research from proposal submission and award negotiation through financial reporting and award closeout as well as a broad spectrum of research-related agreements. ORA submits over 5,000 new proposals annually and manages more than 7,700 active sponsored projects with a total budget exceeding $1.6 billion.

THIS OPPORTUNITY

As a member of Office of Research Administration, the Manager, Research Financial Systems and Analytics is responsible for providing specialized expertise requiring technical finance and systems knowledge to perform complex, technical finance and systems functions with programmatic impact on the institution, requiring professional expertise and application of internal policies and systems and external regulations. The Manager will have a dual report line to the Director of Research Financial Systems and Director of Financial Analytics. The Manager will bridge business needs with technical solutions across different platform to address business challenges; serves as an authority on core business applications and facilitates requirements and design activities on larger initiatives; understands business unit workflows and applies technology solutions in support of those workflows; provides support for application enhancements, application integrations, quality assurance and production support. The Manager will also be working with high level executive leaderships across Stanford to design and build complex financial reports for senior leaderships, board of trustees and university-level executive committee.

CORE DUTIES*
  • A remote worker arrangement may be considered for candidates with the appropriate background and experience. Remote workers' schedules are based in the Pacific Time zone.
  • Perform highly analytical, complex finance and systems functions, multi-dimensional and complex reconciliations and related analysis.
  • Research and synthesize data for broad areas; develop complex financial analyses. Perform root-cause analysis and synthesis, draw conclusions, propose and develop solutions, present and implement recommendations, and create follow up analysis.
  • Develop complex financial reports and presentations by leveraging specialized systems, design and build complex financial reports (eg. Oracle Business Intelligence, Stanford Electronic Research Administration System etc.) , and prepare or review complex transactions to support the stewardship of university resources. Provide consultation to senior leadership to interpret results.
  • Prioritize, identify and resolve strategic and unit/department issues with substantial significance; recognize exceptions, and conduct in-depth analysis using advanced technical knowledge and experience. Recommend, develop and implement solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes; maintain broader organizational and university perspective in decision making.
  • Design an effective system of internal controls for area of responsibility utilizing strategic analysis of interrelationships of financial processes, policies, and procedures; implement and ensure compliance programs.
  • Lead multiple complex and high-visibility process innovation projects. Develop, champion and implement strategic initiatives with significant impact. Empower action, remove obstacles, enable constructive feedback and support from leaders, and reward and recognize progress and achievements.
  • Develop, assess, and continuously improve systems and processes to achieve greater efficiencies and improve internal controls. Design and provide training on new financial systems. Define requirements, develop and implement complex test cases, perform testing and analyze results.
  • Analyze problems in business critical systems, and identify risks, solutions, and strategies; act as business owner of projects.
  • Represent organization to client group(s) and leaders: serve as subject matter expert on matters that involve complex technical, financial, systems, or subject matter expertise.
  • Assess client and business needs and formulate recommendations to determine approach to managing and completing processes.
  • Proven ability in writing user stories and acceptance criteria under Agile methodology strongly desired.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
  • Advanced knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning and financial systems; internet and computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Advanced professional communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Advanced project management skills and ability to contribute to or lead multi-functional team.
  • Advanced Structured Query Language (SQL) expertise
  • Experience with dashboarding/data visualization (i.e. Tableau, Mixpanel, Looker, or equivalent tools)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and manage relationships with partners coming from both technical and non-technical backgrounds

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Routine extended working hours during peak cycles; travel to school/unit sites across university.
  • In compliance with health and safety laws and policies related to COVID-19, the Office of Research Administration has been working remotely since March 2020, and will continue to do so in the near future. Interviewing for this position will be done virtually.
