About the Opportunity

The Compensation Analyst joins a high-functioning team of HR professionals and the position offers a flexible schedule to include a combination of remote and in-person work in our newly renovated collaborative offices in downtown Knoxville.  

The HR compensation analyst serves as a Human Resources team member and is responsible for providing specialized consultation in the areas of classification and compensation for the University of Tennessee System. This position will assist with the design, implementation and maintenance of market-based pay structures, the development and maintenance of job family descriptions and other compensation/human resources related projects. The Compensation Analyst always supports a culture of engagement and belonging by treating others with dignity and respect and by exhibiting conduct that reflects a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Respectfully communicates and cooperates with all employees. Completes all required diversity awareness training to enhance knowledge and eradicate racism in the workplace.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Classification and Data Analytics

  • Reviews and analyzes requests for new positions, reclassifications, and other compensation actions to determine appropriate classification and compensation levels. 
  • Confers with managers and other stakeholders to make sound recommendations consistent with university policy using classification factors, internal and external comparisons, and salary survey data.
  • Conducts and participates in salary surveys to assess local, regional, and national labor markets as necessary or requested.
  • Maintains electronic tracking log(s), process position transactions in the human resource information system (IRIS). 
  • Works with the IRIS team and IT staff to ensure that the HRIS system meets compensation needs and is updated to reflect changes to salary structures and other compensation related elements. 
  • Collaborates with campus human resources partners to develop and document consistent processes and metrics to assess effectiveness of programs.
  • Maintain UT system compensation website by updating job family documents, market ranges, and continuing communication and build out.
Special Projects

    Collaborate on a variety of projects, including compensation program design, analysis, and implementation. Conduct research from various sources including other institutions for synthesis, reporting, or providing to leadership. Provides analytical support and data analysis on projects and human resource metrics.

  • Provide Consultative services, foster teamwork, and communication.
  • Serve as a resource for the University of Tennessee System by providing appropriate, accurate and timely guidance on a variety of human resource issues; research questions and problems to ensure accurate and thorough answers.
  • Provide counsel to employees as needed.
  • Assists in other functional areas of human needed.
  • Actively contribute as a team member to address concerns within Human Resources and across the University community.
  • Encourage and facilitate open communication.
  • Identify and communicate ideas for process improvement to ensure efficiency.
  • Keep supervisor apprised of sensitive issues in a timely manner.
Training & Development

    Develop training programs and serve as facilitator or co-facilitator to present classification, compensation, and other related training classes to a wide variety of audiences.



Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources or related field. A combination of training and experience may be substituted for education. HR related certification, such as PHR, SHRM-CP or CCP is preferred.


Previous experience in Human Resources with exposure to broad functional areas and experience with human resources information systems required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of HR principles and practices. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Strong technical skills. Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply policies and procedures. Demonstrate before diverse groups. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and to make reasonable, logical, and defensible decisions. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Efficient time management and planning skills with ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Must be detail oriented. Skill in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or Access and knowledge of classification and market-based compensation systems is preferred.
