Basic Function/Overview::

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Mental Health Department includes both the Psychiatric Technician and the Addictions Counseling Programs. The programs are some of the most diverse at the college, with students coming from all parts of the world, and from varied socio-cultural backgrounds. The department currently has 7 full time faculty, 5 being in the Psychiatric Technician Program, the remaining two being part of Addictions Counseling. The faculty are dedicated to creating and maintaining the most supportive environment for students, while maintaining the rigor required of programs for which there are State examinations for licensure/certification following completion. This requires a knowledge of supports and services for student success, as well as the full scopes of practice for licensed/certified practitioners. Close collaboration of faculty is required to assure that there are no gaps in knowledge as students advance through the program(s).

OVERVIEW:
Courses to be taught may include MENT 40: Introduction to Interviewing and Counseling, MENT 73T: Psychiatric Nursing for Psychiatric Technicians, MENT 73L: Psychiatric Nursing for Psychiatric Technicians Clinical, MENT 72L: Nursing Care for the Developmentally Disabled Person-Clinical, MENT 56L: Medical-Surgical Clinical Experience, and MENT 56: Medical-Surgical Nursing for Psychiatric Technicians. Additional courses may include: MENT 58D: Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing and Pharmacology for Psychiatric Technician (PT), Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing for Psychiatric Technicians Clinical, MENT 70: Introduction to Psychiatric Technology, MENT 70L: Introduction to Psychiatric Technology, and MENT 72: Nursing care of the Developmentally Disabled Person.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Demands:· Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing, walking, lifting positioning, pushing, and transferring patients.· Fine motor movements with hands and fingers.· Lift and carry at least 125 pounds.· Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Teach in multiple areas of the Psychiatric Technician Program: nursing, developmental disability, and mentally disordered categories as well as pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, and therapeutic communication. This may include didactic and clinical assignments. 2. Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent.3. Teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record.4. Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis.5. Maintain scheduled office and campus hours, and participate in department/division meetings and committees.6. Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies.7. Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.8. Effective oral and written communication with students.9. Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.10 Participate in departmental and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities to maintain and improve the instructional program and to provide service to the college.11. In close cooperation with other discipline faculty, participate in the design, evaluation, revision, and development of culturally relevant curriculum, courses, and/or degrees.12. Contribute to assessment, evaluation, and appropriate modification of coursework using Student Learning and Program Level Outcome measures. Understand basic statistical measures for exam development, assessment and evaluation.13. Early morning, late afternoon, weekend, and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract. This may include up to a 12-hour clinical day. Some clinical assignments require extended commutes.14. Meet additional requirements as stipulated by individual clinical sites, including, but not limited to, health screening, fingerprinting, and background checks.Refer students to appropriate resources as needed for student success.

Required Qualifications:

A. The minimum of one of the following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:
1. Any Bachelor’s degree and two (2) full-time equivalent years of professional experience directly related to the faculty member’s teaching assignment; OR

2. Any Associate’s degree and six (6) full-time equivalent years of professional experience directly related to the faculty member’s teaching assignment; OR

3. The equivalent (please request an equivalency review in the application); OR

4. California Community College credential, “Valid for Life” (no longer issued), authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline; refer to Ed Code § 87355 (If meeting qualifications with this credential, a copy of the valid lifetime credential must be submitted with the application.);

AND

B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Ability to translate curriculum meaningfully for students with diverse backgrounds.
2. Designation as an instructor by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) AND a current active Registered Nurse or Psychiatric Technician license.

License(s) & Other Requirements:

The incumbent may periodically be required to get to a variety of locations. If operating a vehicle, employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Candidates not holding the stated required qualifications who are requesting consideration based on an equivalency, will be asked to complete the equivalency related questions included in the application.

Conditions of Employment:

This is a full-time, tenure-track, 10-month contract position that begins in the 2022-23 academic year. Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching, and related work experience, up to a maximum placement at step 9.

It is also required that a final offer of employment will only be made after the candidate has successfully been live scanned and clearance for employment is authorized by Human Resources. Selection Procedure::
