Systems/Cognitive Neuroscientist - Associate/Full Professor (Tenure Track)

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Jan 24, 2022
Deadline: Jan 24, 2024 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The Department of Neurosurgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in the tenure track. Applicants must have an Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree.

Teaching responsibilities may include the instruction and mentoring of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as participation in lectures, small groups and workshops.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include publishing peer-reviewed publications and presenting your work at scientific meetings and other venues. Securing external funding is required, and a strong track record of grant success, especially from the NIH BRAIN Initiative, is required for a successful candidate. Successful candidates will also have a strong record of novel and high-impact research findings.

The goal of the position is to develop a research program in the neuroscience of non-human primate (NHP) brains with an emphasis on neurotechnology. The research program should encompass two aims. First, it must address fundamental questions in systems and cognitive neuroscience research, broadly defined, including sensory, motor, memory and other cognitive abilities. Second, it must include the development of innovative methods for mapping and measuring NHP brains, including electrical (high-density probes) and optical (multi-photon) techniques. An interest in translating findings and techniques to human patients is also important.

The University of Pennsylvania hosts a large community of systems and cognitive neuroscientists. The Medical School is located adjacent to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, with strengths in neuroengineering in the Department of Bioengineering. Newly renovated dry lab spaces and NHP facilities provide an exciting opportunity to develop a team focused on the most exciting and important questions in neuroscience.

We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.

Vision

As engines of knowledge and new ideas, universities have the unique potential to define the future rather than be defined by it; to pioneer change rather than merely manage it. To do so requires a plan both visionary and pragmatic. The Penn Compact 2022 motivates community members to innovate, be radically inclusive, and positively impact their local, national, and global communities.

Penn’s fundamental priorities — increasing access, integrating knowledge and engaging locally, nationally and globally — are supported by the three core values that make us uniquely Penn: inclusion, innovation, and impact.
