The Global Studies Department at St. Lawrence University invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor position beginning August 15, 2022. The teaching load is three courses per semester and will include supervising senior independent projects and participating in departmental review of the projects. The successful candidate will be expected to teach an introductory course in global political economy and an upper-level theories of political economy course. In addition, the successful candidate will bring research and teaching specialization in Africa and the broader African diaspora. Disciplinary background is open, but applications are encouraged from people who enjoy working at the boundaries of disciplines, area studies, and transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies.

We seek candidates with a proven record of effective teaching practices that embody liberal arts pedagogical philosophies, an active research agenda, a commitment to mentoring undergraduate students and supervising one-on-one independent senior research projects, and a demonstrable dedication to intercultural and international study. We are especially interested in candidates who will strengthen the department’s commitments to social justice; to diverse communities of people and perspectives; to recruiting, supporting, and mentoring students from underrepresented groups; and to meaningful communication through social, cultural, and linguistic scholarship and practice. The successful candidate must therefore, have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds and participate in departmental and university-wide initiatives.

Since 2000, the Global Studies department has been an innovative, transdisciplinary program drawing its theory and methods from critical political economy and cultural studies. In addition to core courses in these areas, students pursue thematic and geographic concentrations through a combination of area studies and other courses, off-campus study, and language study, all leading to a faculty-mentored independent research project in the senior year. More information about the program can be found at

St. Lawrence also has several interdisciplinary minors in a variety of fields. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to cross-list courses and to collaborate with colleagues in these programs where applicable.
