Position Information: Description

This position serves as a member of the Public Services team who provides direct assistance and guidance to library users through reference and instructional services and who serves as bibliographer for the College of Engineering and Mines and additional departments in the sciences.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide reference and research services

  • Work scheduled reference shifts at the Knowledge Commons with the Peer Research Consultants.
  • Schedule research appointments with faculty and students from assigned departments. 
  • Verify difficult Interlibrary Loan requests in assigned subject areas.
  • Attend Public Services meetings and participate in the discussion of timely issues and the planning for improved services and resources.
  • Promote Reference services to the University and the community.

Act as bibliographer for specified academic departments; managing those subject areas of the collection.

  • Confer with faculty liaisons and faculty from assigned academic departments, about information needs, existing resources, and departmental materials budgets and acquisition procedures.
  • Keep informed of the departments' curriculum and research interests and keep the departments informed of developments in the Library.
  • Promote faculty's usage of library resources and their role in promoting of library resources in their classes.
  • Assist departments with accreditation reports by reviewing the existing collection in assigned subject areas and evaluating for quality.
  • Serve as a member of the Collection Development Committee.
  • Respond to special requests from the Head of Collection Strategies and assist with special projects.

Participate in Library's information literacy instruction program.

  • Promote instructional services in research techniques in assigned subject areas of specialization.
  • Conduct general library tours and specialized library presentations as requested by the Research Skills Instruction Coordinator.
  • Develop and create subject guides to the collection as needed.
  • Keep current of recent developments in information literacy/instruction.

Participate in professional activities.

  • Participate in library and university committees and conferences, workshops, or webinars, locally, regionally, nationally
  • Accept opportunities to participate on committees, make presentations, and publish appropriate research or library accomplishments.
  • Keep current on the latest in academic librarianship.
  • Contribute to the advancement of the profession and status of the University and its Libraries by promoting its services, and collections to the University community and beyond.
Required Competencies
  • Strong communications skills, planning, problem solving
  • Ability to work well with staff, faculty, and students
  • Strong commitment to customer service best practices.
Minimum Requirements
  • ALA-accredited master's degree by start date
  • One year relevant academic or research library experience, pre-professional experience counts
  • Experience or coursework in providing reference and research services, including using library databases
  • Experience with or coursework in delivering and/or planning instruction programs
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check will be required before start date

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience or degree in the sciences, engineering, or technology related field or experience working with library resources in those areas.
  • Experience or coursework in collection development
  • Experience with science or engineering databases
  • Experience with Integrated Library Systems such as Alma/Primo
  • Demonstrated ability to create an inclusive research support, teaching, and/or learning environment for a diverse population
Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$50,000 Annual, Exempt, Full-time, Benefited

Work Schedule/Start Date

Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm some nights and weekends

Desired Start Date: July 1, 2022
