Position Summary

Student Ability Success Center (SASC) in the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity provides a full range of accommodations and services to nearly 1,800 students with physical, psychological and learning disabilities, facilitating equal access to the educational process. This is accomplished through direct service support, review of campus accessibility, adaptive technology, assessment, test accommodation, and a variety of other services. Accommodations vary according to types of disabilities and may include sign language interpreting; provision of alternative formats, such as electronic text or Braille; computer-assisted real-time captioning; test accommodation; advising; assistive computer technology; cart transportation service and numerous other services. Provision of these academic support services, technology and advocacy promotes the retention and graduation of students with disabilities at SDSU.

The office consists of the Director, Associate Director, an Accommodations and Evaluations Coordinator, three Counselors, a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Access Coordinator, an Accommodations Specialist, an Alternative Media and Assistive Technology Coordinator, an Operations Coordinator/Budget Officer, a Test Accommodations Coordinator, a Test Accommodation and Captioning Assistant Coordinator, a Special Services Coordinator, three office support staff and 40-50 hourly employees and student assistants.

Two additional programs are affiliated with Student Ability Success Center. The first is funded by a federal Trio-Student Support Services grant that provides enhanced services intended to increase graduation and retention rates of at-risk undergraduates. The Trio-SSS program employs three professional staff. The second is a Workability IV program that is a cooperative contract between the state Department of Rehabilitation (DOR), SDSU Career Services and Student Ability Success Center the purpose of which is to deliver enhanced career services to students with disabilities who are DOR consumers. The Workability IV program employs one full-time professional staff and one part-time support staff.

Under direct supervision of the Associate Director, the Engagement Coordinator conducts outreach and engagement efforts that promote Student Ability Success Center’s services and accommodations for students with disabilities. For incoming or prospective students with disabilities who will require academic accommodations, it is imperative that registration with SASC is completed prior to the start of the academic year. Early outreach and engagement with incoming and prospective students with disabilities ensures that the processes associated with legally mandated accommodations are efficient and meets ADA requirements. The incumbent will attend meetings and discussions with local community colleges, local high schools, and other educational institutions in San Diego County to facilitate timely referrals of students to SASC.

The Engagement Coordinator will also provide active SASC students with information about on and off campus resources to promote their academic success, including tutoring, disability assessment facilities, and specialists as needed per each student’s unique situation. In partnership with the Associate Director, the Disability Career Counselor, and other SASC staff members, the incumbent will facilitate and handle administrative components of workshops, surveys, and programming opportunities to engage active and prospective SASC students.

Individuals within the Student Services Professional IA classification are deemed to be in a trainee level and will receive ongoing training in the following areas:

1. Program Administration and Evaluation
2. Entry Level Student Counseling
3. Program Development and Outreach

This recruitment is for a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end 12 months from data of hire with the possibility of appointment to a Student Services Professional IB at the end of the training period. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a CSU disability services program
• Work experience in disability services at the postsecondary level
• Working knowledge of assistive technology hardware and software, as well as standard computer hardware and software
• Superior oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated competency using Microsoft Excel
• Detail-oriented and capable of coordinating multiple projects concurrently with a high degree of accuracy.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with students and faculty.
• Understanding of, or ability to rapidly acquire understanding of, basic processes in the Test Accommodation Center and in alternative media production.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,513 per month. San Diego State University offers a rich benefits package that constitutes a major portion of total compensation. SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated. The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
