The purpose of the Healthier Together initiative is to implement environmental change strategies for obesity prevention through UGA Extension at the community level in Calhoun, Clay, Dooly, Stewart and Taliaferro counties, where the CDC determined over 40% of adults are obese. The residents of these counties have high rates of physical inactivity, food insecurity, and do not live in environments conducive to being physically active and eating healthy. For those who are overweight and obese, there is a higher incidence of diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and heart disease, which causes the most health-related deaths in the Georgia.

This grant is giving these communities the opportunity to build walking trails and community gardens (among other projects) to increase access to healthy foods and physical activity. To have a major impact on obesity, we must involve multiple sectors within communities — elected officials, churches, businesses, grocery stores, and local health departments and use different strategies. This position is a funded 100% grant which ends September 2023. Sustained position funding is contingent on the continuation of the grant.
