Job Title:          Academic Coach/Advisor                                  

Reports To:      Director, Center for Student Success

Status:              Full Time, Exempt

 A primary focus of this position will be the successful academic transition and integration of the college’s first-year population through offerings that include individualized success coaching, mentoring, student outreach, retention-focused programming, and the monitoring of student progress.

To be effective in the position, the successful candidate will initiate and maintain a high volume of student outreach, maintain a visible presence on campus; enjoy interacting with undergraduates in the capacity of a student advocate and strengths-based counselor, and seek to cultivate a welcoming and approachable demeanor toward students. In addition, they will seek to develop and foster positive working relationships with faculty and administrative offices throughout the campus community.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Proactive advising, in the form of intrusive student outreach (both via email and personal follow-up) and holistic academic advisement
  • Academic coaching based on a proactive, strengths-based, appreciative advisement model
  • Visibility, presence on campus and development of strong working relationship with colleagues in the OSS
  • Monitor student progress, maintain records, and generate evaluative data for departmental reports
  • Design semester schedules, provide guidance on academic matters, academic policies and procedures
  • Maintain a current understanding of all college academic policies and procedures which might inform student academic progress
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with other departments and partners across campus in an effort to support student persistence and success
  • Help in the coordination and implementation of special programs in the OSS including but not limited to the Student Transition and Engagement Program (S.T.E.P.)
  • Represent the OSS at college functions and in presentations to parents and current/prospective students (i.e. Open House, New Student Orientation, etc.)
  • Serve as a primary Academic Advisor to a caseload of undeclared students 
  • Assist with the advisement of Transfer students
  • Ability to serve on a variety of task forces and committees, as needed 
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings
  • Additional duties as assigned
  • Requirements

  • A master’s degree from an accredited institution in Education, Higher Education, Counseling, Human Services or a related field
  • A general understanding of student retention theory 
  • Direct experience providing proactive or intrusive advising support to undergraduate students
  • A clear understanding of the variety of challenges facing college students today 
  • Evidence of ability to engage, motivate and develop students at the college level 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A demonstrated ability to develop mentoring relationships with a diverse student population
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours

    Location. Newburgh, New York. The Mount is conveniently located in the Mid-Hudson Valley, midway between New York City and New York's capital city, Albany. The Mount is in Newburgh in Orange County, New York, on a beautiful campus that overlooks the western banks of the Hudson River. It's less than a mile from the intersection of the New York State Thruway and Interstate 84, and just a few blocks from entrance to the Newburgh side of the Beacon-Newburgh Bridge. The Mount is also easily accessible by plane, with Stewart Airport just minutes from campus. The Mid-Hudson Valley offers a scope of unparalleled natural beauty in a landscape of mountains, river and forest. Hiking, biking, walking, swimming, mountain climbing, skiing, snowboarding, and our park activities offer so many ways to explore the natural environment.

    Enrollment/Student Body Profile. Our student body is made up of 2,700+ students representing over 16 states and several countries. 1,800 are traditional undergraduate students.

    Academic Programs. The Mount offers 50 undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Our collaboration programs offer you a chance to earn a bachelor's degree, plus an advanced degree with schools like Fordham University, Pace University, and New York Medical College. The college also offers master's degrees in education, business, and nursing.

    Faculty. Students learn from our faculty, the majority of whom hold a Ph.D. or the highest terminal degree in their field. Our Student/Faculty Ratio is 17 students:1 faculty member.
