POSITION TITLE: FACULTY, EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES/FIRE SCIENCE
STATUS: Full time Tenure Track
DEPARTMENT: Health and Public Services

REPORTS TO: Department Chair
PLACEMENT: Placement on salary schedule is dependent on qualifications.

POSITION SUMMARY

Adapt to new and changing situations and demonstrate a positive attitude. Fifteen credit hours a semester constitute a normal load. Position is subject to all terms and provisions of the Joliet Junior College faculty contract. Course assignments may be early morning, late afternoon, evening, Saturday, summer, and at branch campuses or satellite centers including some classes that may include outdoor activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teaching responsibilities include introductory and advanced classes in EMS, as well as introductory fire science courses.

2. Work closely with program coordinators, other instructors and special programs and services within the college to determine placements, curriculum, EMS System/IDPH guidelines, OSFM certification and academic support.

3. Act as liaison for paramedic program partners, EMS clinical sites and fire academy partners.

4. Participate in traditional, online, and/or blended course development and revision, assessment, accreditation, and planning activities.

5. Participate in appropriate departmental meetings and recruitment activities; serve on committees.

6. Assist students with academic advising.

7. Demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning.

8. Demonstrate strong understanding and commitment to the community college mission.

9. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.

10. Teach at other campus sites as needed.

11. Meet other contractual obligations as spelled out in the Joliet Junior College faculty contract.

OTHER REQUIRED DUTIES

1. Monitor condition of instructional equipment, maintain or recommend maintenance as necessary. Establish and maintain inventories of equipment.

2. Act as a contact person for EMS and Fire Science to industry, schools, individuals and organizations.

3. Participate on advisory boards or organizations related to the program.

4. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor’s Degree in EMS Administration/Fire Administration/Public Administration/Public Health Education, or related field; or a Bachelor’s Degree in unrelated field with equivalent related certifications/experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

2. Current Illinois Paramedic license or PHRN license, or current NREMT Paramedic license with the ability to obtain an Illinois Paramedic license.

3. Current OSFM BOF/FFII.

4. Ten (10) years experience as a firefighter/paramedic or ten (10) years experience as a 911 single-role paramedic with previous firefighter experience; or an equivalent combination of EMS and fire experience may be considered.

5. Five (5) years’ EMS education experience in a college, fire department, EMS provider or hospital setting.

6. Five (5) years’ fire science education experience in a college, fire department, EMS provider or hospital setting.

7. If not already certified currently, must be a state certified EMS Lead Instructor I and OSFM Fire Instructor I by end of first year of hire.

8. Familiarity with area EMS provider agencies, fire departments, OSFM certification and regulations, and state EMS certification and regulations is a necessity.

9. Expertise in appropriate technologies for instruction.

10. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Master’s Degree in related field.

2. Experience with developing and coordinating an EMS education program, course, or curriculum.

3. Experience with developing and coordinating a fire science education program, course, or curriculum.

4. Current OSFM AOF/FFIII

5. EMS Lead Instructor II

6. OSFM Fire Instructor II

7. Current Class B non-CDL license and knowledge of basic fire apparatus operations.

8. College teaching experience, particularly in a community college.

9. Experience in college course development and assessment, planning, quality and accreditation processes, and committee service.

10. Experience with traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds.

11. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.

12. Demonstrated multicultural competence.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

1. Standard classroom equipment and software.

2. Standard pre-hospital and hospital equipment and software.

3. Must be able to lift 35 lbs.

4. Must comfortably act as patient and/or crew stand-in for hands-on patient assessment and basic fire suppression activities.

WORKING CONDITIONS
