General Summary

Highline College delivers innovative education and training opportunities to foster personal and professional success in our multicultural world and global economy.

Program Overview: YRSP serves students, 16 years old and older who have not graduated high school or are significantly behind in credits and need to graduate. We serve students through high school courses, competency-based projects, and dual credit options that allows students to earn a high school diploma while progressing toward a college degree or certificate.  
 
Position Overview: Faculty in this position teach pre-college level reading and writing courses that are equivalent to 9th - 12th grade English.

Salary will depend upon the number of classes taught.

Essential Tasks

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PART-TIME FACULTY:
 

  • Provide instruction to students;
  • Promote effective learning;
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate instructional programming to meet the needs of students;
  • Ensure that course content is consistent with department guidelines;
  • Maintain communication with department coordinators, managers and program director to discuss student progress and program developments;
  • Meet and maintain, as a condition of employment, the requirements for certification appropriate to the instructor’s particular field. This may include vocational certification and professional licensing;
  • Direct students to appropriate campus resources as needed;
  • Pursue appropriate professional development activities in order to stay current in assigned teaching fields, program, and discipline;
  • Comply with applicable state and federal laws, and programmatic/OSPI reporting regulations;
  • Maintain a standard of honest and ethical behavior regarding professional duties;
  • Other duties as assigned (staff meetings, student intervention meetings, program information sessions, proctoring and grading assessments, orientation, etc.) 

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • Master's Degree in Education or a related field OR a Bachelor's and related experience;
  • Two years of teaching experience in the field;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English with a diverse student population; 
  • Desire and experience working with a wide range of high school aged students and/or developmental college learners of various skills (i.e. English Language Learners, AP students student with IEPs, etc.) in nontraditional settings or credit retrieval programs;
  • Experience teaching high school English, English Language Learners, developmental and/or college level reading and writing, public speaking and history;
  • Experience in scaffolding and modifying instruction based on student and programmatic needs; 

 DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • Successful experience teaching and supporting marginalized populations or  work with youth re-engagement program students;
  • Successful experience working within a team of educators; 
  • Curriculum development; 
  •  Academic advising experience;
  • Knowledge of teaching principles, practices, techniques and approaches;
  • Knowledge of current trends, theories and technologies pertaining to learning and instruction;
  • Knowledge of assessment procedures and techniques, test construction and evaluation methods;

 

Supplemental Information

 

Applicants considered for this position will be required to disclose if they are the subject of any substantiated findings or current investigations related to sexual misconduct at their current employment and past employment. Disclosure is required under Washington state law.
 
Highline College does require COVID-19 vaccinations for all students, staff and faculty –– with waivers for specific exemptions –– for those who physically attend courses, operations, or other in-person activities. This decision was made in accordance with higher education proclamation 20-12.4. A candidate will not be asked to report their vaccination status unless they are hired by the College. If a candidate chosen for hiring is not fully vaccinated from COVID-19 and plans to submit a medical or religious exemption to this employment condition, the hiring process will be suspended until a decision has been made regarding any exemption application which is submitted. A candidate will not be allowed to do any work for Highline College or be onboarded as a new employee during the time period when the exemption is being considered. The request for an exemption does not guarantee approval.
