Departmental Overview

Berkeley is widely regarded as the #1 global university in Chemistry with graduate and undergraduate rankings of the College of Chemistry's two departments - Chemistry and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering - and the disciplines within them ranked as either #1 or #2 in the world. The College of Chemistry was founded 150 years ago in 1872 and is unique in combining Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering within one college, which lends itself to greater collaboration and inter-disciplinary research discoveries. The students and faculty at the College of Chemistry are world renowned and have been awarded with 16 Nobel Prizes including three in the last four years (2018 Frances Arnold PhD 85, 2020 Professor Jennifer Doudna, and 2021 Professor David MacMillan).

The College Relations & Development department is within the Dean's Office and includes 9 full-time professionals that oversee all fundraising, communications, events, and alumni and corporate engagement activities for the College, including overseeing the alumni and advisory boards. College Relations & Develop annually raises over $25 Million and $2M in Annual Fund support from its 20,000+ community members which includes students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, corporate partners, donors and friends.

The Director of Marketing & Communications produces all of College Relations & Development's communications, including the news and other content for our websites, annual Catalyst Magazine, annual Impact Report, monthly Periodic Newsletter, and social media content on Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. The Director of Marketing & Communications also produces various creative projects for the College, such as special exhibits (Mars Mariner wall display), electronic lobby displays, poster series, award plaques (Nobel Prize & National Science Awards), video projects, special proposals, signage, etc. The Director of Marketing & Communications provides our Dean, Senior Assistant Dean of College Relations & Development, Department Chairs, faculty and staff with strategic advice and support related to our College's branding, marketing and communications, including interviewing faculty to report upon their research, awards, and breakthroughs. The Director of Marketing & Communications oversees one student worker that supports our social media channels, has a dotted line over 50% of our College's Web Manager, and regularly contracts campus or external designers, printers, writers, videographers and photographers. The Director of Marketing & Communications must possess strong technical writing abilities to synthesize complicated scientific research into approachable feature stories for our alumni and donors, an ability to interview and develop stories about faculty, students, alumni, and donors, and the ability to manage marketing and communication needs across all mediums -- print, email, web, social media, video, etc.

Responsibilities
  • The Director of Marketing & Communications manages complex comprehensive communications programs, including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications, for large, highly visible organizations.
  • The Director of Marketing & Communications produces a variety of communication pieces in a variety of venues including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications.
  • The Director of Marketing & Communications ensures production of high quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints. The Director of Marketing & Communications identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements. In particular, the Director of Marketing & Communications produces all of College Relations & Development's communications, including the news and other content for our websites, annual Catalyst Magazine, annual Impact Report, monthly Periodic Newsletter, and social media content on Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
  • The Director of Marketing & Communications also produces various creative projects for the College, such as special exhibits (Mars Mariner wall display), electronic lobby displays, poster series, award plaques (Nobel Prize & National Science Awards), video projects, special proposals, signage, etc.

  • The Director of Marketing & Communications works with departmental, college or division administration to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
  • The Director of Marketing & Communications provides advice and counsel to departmental or college administration on all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, effective messaging, and problem resolution.
  • The Director of Marketing & Communications works with management to build an organizational brand and create tools for positioning the organization strategically with the organization's clients. In particular, the Director of Marketing & Communications provides our Dean, Senior Assistant Dean of College Relations & Development, Department Chairs, faculty and staff with strategic advice and support related to our College's branding, marketing and communications, including interviewing faculty to report upon their research, awards, and breakthroughs.
  • The Director of Marketing & Communication serves as the point of contact for the College of Chemistry to UC Berkeley's University Communications, Public Affairs, the communications teams at Berkeley Lab and University Development & Alumni Relations (UDAR). The Director of Marketing & Communications interacts with the highest levels of UC Berkeley leadership, including the Chancellor and Associate Vice Chancellor and Provosts.
  • The Director of Marketing & Communications oversees one student worker that supports our social media channels, has a dotted line over 50% of our College's Web Manager, and regularly contracts campus or external designers, printers, writers, videographers and photographers.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional staff, or personally perform technical work, including writing, design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
  • Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short term strategic communication plans.
  • Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training -- technical/scientific writing/editing and university communications/marketing.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $110,000.00 - $130,000.00.

This is a remote-friendly position, eligible for 80% remote capability.
