Department

The Department of Communication, housed in the School of Business and Industry, currently houses approximately 200 students. We currently offer an ACEJMC accredited Bachelor of the Arts program in Communication, with tracks in Public Relations and Advertising, Broadcast, and Digital Journalism. The department is rapidly approaching reaccreditation in 2023, and will be focused on development and refinement of its curriculum and offerings in student organizations. We also house a student media program that includes a student-run newspaper (The Chanticleer) and a student-run FM radio station (WLJS 91.9). Students also have the opportunity to join our Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and Zeta Phi Eta.

Job Summary

The Department of Communication invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Communication, with specializations in Public Relations and/or Advertising. This tenure-track position entails a 3:4 teaching load and approximately 9 months of full-time service beginning August 2022. Further, the position is for teaching undergraduate Communication courses and requires teaching competencies in public relations, advertising, and mass communication. Special consideration will be given to those focused on digital, technological, and disciplinary integration, those focusing on matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion in public relations and advertising, leadership, and quantitative research methods.

Courses are offered through various delivery formats including face-to-face, hybrid/blended, and 100% on-line. JSU also serves a robust population of nontraditional and first-generation learners. Quality teaching will be the successful candidate’s primary responsibility, but advising, in balance with service to the department supporting our PRSSA chapter, student media, and contributing to the ongoing development and innovation in our curriculum as we approach re-accreditation in 2023.

Qualifications

Required

  • All applicants must have a PhD. in Mass Communication or a related field to the job description (ABDs will be considered, given timing of post).

Preferred

  • 3-5 years of industry experience in public relations and/or advertising.
  • Evidence of quality prior teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Expertise in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion issues in public relations and advertising.
  • Scholarly interest in leadership and management in public relations or advertising.
  • Philosophical commitment to digital, technological, and disciplinary integration.
  • Quantitative research proficiency.
