The Department of Secondary Education invites applicants to apply for a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant/Associate Professor of Teacher Education, English/Language Arts.

Academically JSU offers 95 academic programs and concentrations, including bachelor's, master's, post-baccalaureate, doctoral and advanced certificate programs in a variety of disciplines that prepare graduates for meaningful careers and ongoing education. More than 40 online programs are offered. The Department: The Department of Secondary Education focuses on the development of teachers in English/language arts, mathematics, sciences, and social studies for grades 6-12 and will be launching programs in middle grades (4-8). Each of our program offerings is accredited by the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and CAEP.

Our mission is to prepare professional educators to be knowledgeable, ethical, caring, creative decision makers and learners in a diverse society through degree programs grounded in educational research, theory, and best practices, including pedagogy rich with content knowledge, integrated technologies, innovative practices, and opportunities for reflection.

The Position: The primary responsibilities of the Assistant/Associate Professor of Teacher Education, English/Language Arts includes serving as the English Program Chair and teaching departmental courses, including but not limited to methods, foundations, and clinical supervision (including EdTPA). Course delivery may be face-to-face, online, or hybrid. Our courses are offered during the day, evening, and weekends.

The English Education Program Chair responsibilities include participating in assigned meetings and activities relating to program decision making, and organization of data collection for ALSDE’s Continuous Improvement in Educator Preparation (CIEP). The Program Chair will work collaboratively with faculty and stakeholders to ensure appropriate collection of data, analysis, and dissemination to Department, College and at stakeholder meetings. The Program Chair will assist the Department Head with CIEP annual reporting, demonstrate collegiality, and submit a time and effort report each semester.

The faculty member is expected to maintain a balanced portfolio of scholarship, teaching, and service; to participate in the governance of the college at the department, discipline, campus, and university-wide levels; and perform other duties within scope of this position as assigned by the supervisor.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Participating in recruiting and retention efforts.
  • Mentoring and advising teacher candidates.
  • Attend meetings,
  • Required office hours.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 3-years teaching English/Language Arts at the middle school/high school level with demonstrated knowledge of instructional practices in middle and secondary English Language Arts.
  • An earned doctorate in English Language Arts Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or other related area. ABD considered with defense date.
  • Certification in English Language Arts Education (middle or secondary certification)
  • Evidence of impact on student learning in grades 4-12 and/or in higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology and knowledge of assessment practices in English Education is required.
  • Evidence of scholarship, scholarship potential, and/or research agenda.
  • Experience in accreditation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or knowledge of the philosophical foundations of This We Believe.
  • Demonstrated skill, knowledge and abilities in grant writing and implementation.
  • Prior teaching experience in higher education.
  • Experience teaching virtually or hybrid.
  • Evidence of effective implementation of a variety of teaching methods, data driven instructional practices, and technology integration.
