Job Summary

The University Marcom Group leads and coordinates strategic marketing efforts for UMass Amherst to raise the institution’s global visibility and deepen its reputation as one of the nation’s great public research universities. It tells the university’s stories across a wide array of platforms and builds strong relationships with important audiences through a variety of traditional and innovative marketing tactics. Additionally, the Marcom group provides leadership, consultation, partnership, and coordination for marketers and communicators across campus, collaborating with all colleges, schools, and units.

The university is in the process of bringing all major public facing website properties onto a unified technical platform that is supported by a robust content management system (Drupal) and clear web governance. As a result, we are looking for several key players to round out our existing team.

The University Marcom Group is responsible for driving the overall website content strategy based on our specific goals and objectives. The Web Content Manager’s primary duty is to maintain the university’s public-facing institutional web content and ensure that websites are updated regularly with relevant, effective, and exciting material. Our ideal candidate is a strong writer with experience in digital content management and content strategy and has a strong handle on best practices related to data and analytics. This role will require the ability to become a brand and content expert, while demonstrating leadership, ingenuity, creativity, and collaboration with multiple university stakeholders. Essential Functions

The person in this role is expected to perform the following daily functions:

  • Responsible for overseeing the planning, organization, creation, and publishing of website content.
  • Manage and mentor web content team.
  • Collaborate with senior writer in Creative to ensure all information posted conforms to university editorial standards and guidelines and is tied to the university’s brand pillars.
  • Collaborate with university partners (schools, colleges, and units) to revise existing pages and create new web content, ensuring that all information posted is accurate and on brand in voice and tone.
  • Work with university partners to deploy digital content created by Marcom members and/or campus partners in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Translate print and electronic documents into formats suitable for web-based presentation.
  • Perform minor image manipulation tasks such as creating document thumbnails.
  • Maintain directory structure for files and images not managed within the content management system.
  • Assess the usability of the pages, making recommendations for changes as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and respectful university community.
  • Monitor and analyze campaign data and present actionable insights.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends, best practices, and tactics.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure):

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, or other relevant field.
  • Five plus (5+) years’ experience in content strategy, content design, web writing, or similar.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience with the ability to lead and motivate staff to produce high quality work.
  • Proven skills creating, managing, and maintaining taxonomies in content management systems (CMS).
  • Excellent writer and communicator who is organized, detail-oriented, and analytical.
  • Familiarity with search engine optimization and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) writing techniques.
  • Familiarity with front-end design (HTML, CSS, JS).
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Chicago/AP style, grammar, and efficient writing.
  • Ability to prioritize goals and formulate independent decisions regarding procedures and operations.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure):

  • Demonstrated experience with a CMS (Drupal, WordPress, other).
  • A mix of public/private industry, higher-education, and nonprofit experience.
  • Strong commitment to working collaboratively with campus colleagues and external constituencies to advance the overall strategic goals of the university.
  • Experience with modern collaborative tools such as MS Teams, SharePoint, Wrike, or Basecamp.
