Job Summary

The Marketing & Communications (Marcom) group leads and coordinates strategic marketing efforts for UMass Amherst to raise the institution’s global visibility and deepen its reputation as one of the nation’s great public research universities. It tells the University’s stories through a wide array of platforms and builds strong relationships with important audiences through a variety of traditional and innovative marketing tactics. Additionally, the Marcom group provides leadership, consultation, partnership, and coordination for marketers and communicators across campus, collaborating with all colleges, schools, and units.

The University is in the process of bringing all the major public-facing website properties onto a unified technical platform that is supported by a robust content management system (Drupal) and clear web governance.

The Web Designer/Developer is responsible for producing web design and web development strategies which showcase multimedia content that contribute to advancing the university goal of positioning UMass Amherst as a premier national research institution.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for creating websites for the university and campus partners following an established web development process including discovery, analysis, design, development, and deployment.
  • Work with university partners to develop new site maps, wireframes, and web page designs that meet their goals while adhering to the university’s brand standards.
  • Use Drupal to design and build websites, specifically responsible for the theming/front-end design while incorporating a solid understanding of back-end modules selection.
  • Responsible for formulating effective, responsive web designs which demonstrate an understanding of element arrangements on the screen, color choices and font selection which adhere to web-accessibility standards.
  • Integrate content, design, and navigation of new website production into standardized HTML, XHTML, XML, XSLT, PHP, JavaScript, and CSS code.
  • Develop reusable design components.
  • Collaborate with internal Information Technology staff to create and maintain Drupal install profiles to facilitate repeatable and scalable websites.
  • Contribute to designing and implementing new features and functionality.
  • Develop sites to maximize search engine optimization, proper cross-platform website rendering, and better page loading performance.
  • Research, recommend, and implement new technical platforms for specialty website production needs, such as social media integration, blog-style websites, multimedia integration, and specialty CMS functionality.
  • Stay up to date on best practices and overall web design trends and bring latest ideas forth to position UMass as a leader in web design.
  • Demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, and respectful university community.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent education and training plus a minimum of five (5) years' experience in designing, building, and implementing websites.
  • Demonstrated experience building Drupal websites.
  • Extremely fluent with HTML5/XHTML and CSS.
  • Experience working with PHP, JavaScript, and jQuery
  • Familiarity with HTML and CSS standards and best practices for site design and function.
  • Experience with usability testing for websites.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others to formulate plans and objectives in accordance with overall departmental goals.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and coordinate with other cross-functional teams.
  • Problem solver.
  • Flexible and adaptable.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • A mix of public/private industry, higher-education, and nonprofit experience.
  • Experience with modern collaborative tools such as MS Teams, SharePoint, Wrike, or Basecamp.
  • Experience with Twig templating language.
  • Experience with Git version control or another distributed version control software.
