Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

WUNC Radio provides quality news, information and entertainment programming to a broad listening audience that includes North Carolina, the United States and the world. WUNC serves North Carolinians from Greensboro to the Outer Banks through a network of seven stations, with a weekly cume of 300,000 listeners.

Position Summary:

The President and General Manager is responsible for the management, growth and sustainability of North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC, the public radio broadcast service of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. WUNC serves more than 300,000 weekly listeners in over 50 North Carolina Counties, from Greensboro to the Outer Banks. North Carolina Public Radio consists of seven radio stations, with its main studios in Chapel Hill, in addition to studios in Durham’s American Tobacco Historic District, Greensboro and the Capitol bureau.

The President and General Manager reports to WUNC Public Radio LLC’s Board of Directors and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Vice Chancellor of Communications.

The General Manager is responsible for the overall management of WUNC. This includes providing strong staff leadership, leading the strategic direction of the organization, focusing on audience expansion and depth, and ensuring North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC continues to provide excellent content across all platforms. Additionally, as the station’s senior executive, the General Manager will be responsible for the overall management of fundraising, marketing, information technology, engineering, business administration, legal and compliance matters, and human resources. They will work to implement DEI best practices within the station and support an inclusive work environment. This role also oversees community relations and works to foster strong relationships within the community and industry.

The General Manager has an active working relationship with the WUNC Public Radio, LLC Board of Directors through regular meetings and informal interactions to communicate financial status, strategic opportunities and challenges, and on-going accomplishments and activities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

A bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, communication, public policy, or related field.

A minimum of five years’ experience in senior management positions in radio, public broadcasting or a related field with demonstrated supervisory experience.

Experience effectively working with Boards of Directors through constant communication and board support.

Ability to work effectively with the staff, board of directors, volunteers, and members of the University.

Superior, proven oral and written communication skills and the ability to sell ideas and concepts to various constituencies, internal and external. Strong presentation skills in one-on-one executive briefings and large audience settings.

Successful and creative risk-taking abilities, sound business disciplines, and strategic thinking.

Demonstrated ability to establish and execute long-term strategic planning.

Possess a thorough understanding of today’s media landscape, and an ability to lead through transitions and challenges by innovating and adapting to changing markets or competition.

Experience with and understanding of the opportunities and risks associated with digital media
Have experience engaging and communicating with an array of stakeholders, influencers and community leaders.

A high level of expertise and commitment in DEI best practices, including creating an inclusive workplace and engaging effectively to advance understanding, growth and maintain inclusion across organizational structure.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina is about 30 miles from the state capital, Raleigh, and 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Sports and athletic programs: UNC is an NCAA Division I school with 28 varsity teams. Carolina is the proud home of the Dean Smith Center, Kenan Stadium, Carmichael Auditorium, Koury Natatorium, and many other fine athletic facilities. Students join more than 60 intramural and club sports, which include baseball, bowling, crew, golf, lacrosse, rock climbing, rugby, tae kwon do, and ultimate frisbee. Technological facilities: Students find multiple uses for Carolina's state-of-the-art technological resources. The MetaLab oversees the development of SunSITE, one of the world's busiest digital library and electronic publishing projects.

Students may open e-mail accounts, and many use campus computer resources to construct personal Web pages. Students in residence halls have hardwired network connections to the Internet and cable television in their rooms. At the ATN Training center, students may take classes on software packages and utilities. Computer labs are available for student use all over campus.

Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
