Position Summary:

The Dean of the UNC School of Nursing reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. Appointments are reviewed every five years. The Dean plays a key leadership role in advancing the mission*, operations and service of the School, with complete responsibility for personnel, general administration and management, budget, academic and development functions.
Key Priorities:
- Set strategic direction for the School based on an assessment of strengths and needs relative to the university’s priorities and the unique roles that UNC-Chapel Hill assumes within the state university system;
- Develop a clear identity for the School;
- Recruit, retain and engage the best faculty members, enhance their career development, and empower them to participate in school governance;
- Promote quality, innovation, and scholarship in nursing education and practice arenas;
- Play a key role in raising funds for a development campaign;
- Increase research activities and grow the school’s externally-funded research portfolio, and prominence within the nursing science community;
- Prepare for accreditation;
- Ensure sound financial and operational management;
- Facilitate collaboration with other university schools/units, clinical entities, UNC Health Care, and community-based agencies to foster interprofessional education, research, clinical, community outreach, and other School priorities.

Specific Responsibilities:
Executive Leadership
- Provide leadership for strategic planning;
- Provide leadership in the development, implementation and review of academic, administrative, and governance policies and procedures in all major areas of operation;
- Provide leadership, instructions, guidance and/or counsel to School faculty members, staff and administrators, resolving problems at the School level;
- Provide leadership in establishing the School’s objectives and develop and manage all resources essential to the achievement of these objectives;
- Interpret and implement university policies at the School level.

Academic Oversight
- Recruit and retain top faculty members who will achieve high standards of excellence and will enhance the cultural and ethnic diversity of the School and University;
- Evaluate faculty members for appointment, tenure and promotion, in accordance with the School’s appointments, promotion and tenure committees;
- Provide leadership and oversight to academic programs. Encourage, review and support continuous improvement of programs and curriculum;
- Evaluate and approve all curricular changes, advising functions and student recruitment and retention actions and initiatives;
- Promote and provide oversight to research programs and grants;
- Plan and report research activities.

Financial Management
- Oversee the financial management of the School;
- Develop, monitor and advise sub-units on budgets and fiscal management;
- Allocate current expenses, capital equipment and personnel budgets;
- Manage School-wide resource acquisition and utilization.

External Relations
- Serve as the primary advocate and spokesperson for the School;
- Lead and direct School outreach activities, including serving as a principal representative of the School in relations with local external constituencies (e.g. advisory boards, alumni, legislators, media, community leaders, business and professional organizations, etc.);
- Cultivate and solicit individual donors, foundations and corporations;
- Lead the School’s development efforts and ensure that campaign priorities are consistent with the School’s academic vision;
- Represent the School to the University administration and at appropriate University bodies, committees and councils.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

EPA Education Requirements
- Graduate Nursing degree required;
- Distinguished record of scholarly achievement and professional credentials consistent with appointment at the rank of full professor;
- Should have a record of fostering excellence in research, teaching service, and manifest a commitment to academic excellence and leadership.

- Interest in appointment, promotion and tenure procedures;
- Ability to motivate and inspire others to strive continuously for academic excellence;
- Demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary ethic;
- Successful experience as a dean, associate dean, department chair, research center or institute director, or other major leadership role.

Academic Qualifications:
- Significant academic and scholarly credentials, including a passion for academic excellence;
- Credentials for appointment at the tenured Full Professor level.

- A global perspective and a commitment to participating in the globalization of the School and the University.

Fundraising Ability:
- Demonstrated skill in generating philanthropic support from individuals, foundations and corporations, and a genuine interest in fundraising.
Financial Management Experience:
- A record of strong operational leadership demonstrating excellence, growth and financial effectiveness;
- Demonstrated experience in fiscal management.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina is about 30 miles from the state capital, Raleigh, and 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Sports and athletic programs: UNC is an NCAA Division I school with 28 varsity teams. Carolina is the proud home of the Dean Smith Center, Kenan Stadium, Carmichael Auditorium, Koury Natatorium, and many other fine athletic facilities. Technological facilities: Students find multiple uses for Carolina's state-of-the-art technological resources. They can access Carolina's computer services through Academic Technology and Networks, which manages academic computing, e-mail, microcomputing labs, interactive media presentation, video and classroom support, and a help desk. The MetaLab oversees the development of SunSITE, one of the world's busiest digital library and electronic publishing projects.

Students may open e-mail accounts, and many use campus computer resources to construct personal Web pages. Students in residence halls have hardwired network connections to the Internet and cable television in their rooms. At the ATN Training center, students may take classes on software packages and utilities. Computer labs are available for student use all over campus.

Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
