Job Title: Financial Aid Counselor

Reporting Relationship: Director of Financial Aid

Unit: IWU-Marion

Summary of Position: The Financial Aid Counselor provides counseling for a section of students determined by the Director of Financial Aid. The counselor advises students about the financial aid application process, financial aid eligibility, treatment of unusual and extenuating circumstances, and financial aid programs.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow office policies and procedures with respect to all processes and responsibilities
  • Counsel students and families in person, in writing, over the phone and virtually on all matters relating to financial aid application, eligibility, affordability and awards
  • Understand services and resources available for students served on the Marion campus
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Admissions, Student Accounts, Registration and Academic Services, and Student Development to meet students' needs
  • Maintain student records with documentation of contacts, communications, and counseling
  • Analyze various system generated reports and take action as needed to ensure timely financial aid
  • Work towards resolving student issues using internal tools and resources
  • Make recommendations and referrals to other institutional personnel as needed to support the student experience
  • Review complex federal income tax returns and other documentation submitted and determine appropriate next steps for application
  • Actively participate in Visit Day and Clearance events hosted by the campus
  • Actively participates in trainings and professional development
  • Support the Director of Financial Aid with time-sensitive projects as assigned

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required

Experience

  • Financial Aid experience preferred, but not required

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team-based environment, manage conflicting priorities and work under deadlines
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google suite of software applications
  • Detail-oriented with organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Able to manage deadline oriented projects
  • Able to demonstrate critical thinking, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to take initiative
  • Able to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner
