Departmental Overview

The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new structure at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age. Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity—and building the capacity to respond to these challenges. CDSS connects the Data Science Undergraduate Studies, School of Information, Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Center for Computational Biology, and the Data Science Commons. The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year.

The Digital Communications Specialist role develops, enhances, and maintains websites and social media and digital properties with a broad and growing audience. The incumbent researches, develops, reviews, and edits web and multimedia content including design, images, infographics, and video. This individual works collaboratively with the communications team for the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) on digital strategy and communications planning, as well as engages with staff, student interns, partners, and contractors on work products and website maintenance. Determines methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining and documenting results and develops regular internal reports on reach and impacts of digital communication products and properties, including website and social media accounts. The DCS builds and maintains collaborative relationships with CDSS affiliates, staff across campus, and partners related to digital communications. Proposes new and innovative pilot projects in digital communications and recommends technology that will support the digital communications goals. Directly supervised by CDSS' Chief Communications Officer.

Responsibilities

50% Develops, enhances, and maintains websites and social media and digital properties with a broad and growing audience. Engages with staff, student interns, partners, and contractors on work products and website maintenance.

20% Researches, develops, reviews, and edits web and multimedia content including design, images, infographics, and video.

20% Collaborates with supervisor and communications team to develop strategic digital communication plans that meet the organization's needs and effectively delivers the desired message to targeted audiences. Sets goals and provides regular reports on progress.

10% Maintains currency with emerging and state-of-the-art web-related technologies, requirements and developments (for example, accessibility issues) and recommends or implements actions.

Required Qualifications

*The position is designated hybrid, with 3 days on campus, and 2 days remote*
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge of digital communication media, including Drupal and other content management systems, relevant web applications used for website production, and computer application programs.
  • Thorough skill in developing and maintaining effective websites, social media, and digital properties.
  • Understanding of processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communication.
  • Thorough skill in project management to set goals, monitor and assess project status, make necessary changes or improvements, and complete projects within budget and time constraints.
  • Interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and skill in trouble-shooting and applying proactive and positive solutions.
  • Experience using communication tools such as Drupal CMS, Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator), Microsoft Office, and Google suite.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.

Preferred Qualifications

Thorough skills in computer applications for web production, social media, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, data visualization, web interaction, and/or other state-of-the-art digital communication capabilities.

Thorough knowledge of the organization, including its achievements, goals, objectives, vision and mission and how digital communication can effectively convey and advance the message to various audiences.

*The salary range designated for this position: $69,000 - $89,000; however, starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
